Huh — DU has no aviation group
I have a question for military aviation enthusiasts who know more than I, so I looked for the most likely forum in which to get an answer — and there ain't one.

I know there're a lotta aircraft fanciers here. Y'think such a group would be viable?

1. I would certainly visit such a forum
My husband is an air show nut. I take quite a few photos at the air shows we attend (wish I had your camera...mine is just a point and shoot).

4. My camera?
Y'mean my museum-piece Canon A-1s, both of which need repair? Or my little Fuji point-'n'-shoot digital?

Anyway, y'wanna be one of the 10 "active participants" needed to start a group? :D

Oh — since you've been in Irvine, have you been up to the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino? I went about 12 years ago while in Pomona for a conference. Went inside the B-17 "Picadilly Lilly," the one from "Twelve O'Clock High."

10. The EOS-1D Mark III?

Suggested Retail Price: $4,499. And that's without lenses, so figure on another $6,000 or so.

19. I don't remember pricing that one
But the most expensive 35mm lens I ever saw was a Zeiss in the 90-105mm range. It was either an f/2 or a 2.8, and it cost like $11,000.

I remember saying, "They must've trained minks to polish the glass with their tails."

33. I'd have to use a stick
I knew one newspaper photographer, though, who always hand-held a Nikon 300mm f/2.8. He was a good-sized dude, but you'd think only Popeye's wrists could keep that sucker from shaking. I have a Tokina 300 f/2.8 and I wouldn't try to hand-hold it unless I were in a crouch or something.

It's about an aircraft designation — "bis," as in "MiG-15 bis." What's that mean?

8. Call Me Wesley to the rescue:
What does "bis" mean in MiG-21bis?

Bis stands for "second" althought it is not a Russian word. The word have been adopted from French, but it originates from Latin meaning "twice", "second", "encore", "repetition". "Improved" captures the intent of the meaning, which is that the MiG-21bis is an improved model of the original production run. There is also ter which stands for "third", e.g. Polikarpov's I-153 was alternativly called I-15ter and I-152 was I-15bis. Both were further modifications of I-15.

The usage of bis was popular in the prewar perioud and was completely dropped by 60's. Today it is more common to give a whole new designation, e.g. Su-27 and Su-30, although in 1930's Su-30 could most certainly be a Su-27bis, just as improved I-16 became I-16bis. It is also common to use M or U suffixes which mean "improved" and stands for "modernizirovanyi", "usovershenstvonannyi" and "uluchenyi", e.g. Yak-9U, MiG-21PM, Su-30MK. Note that U is most cases stands for "uchebnyi" and is broadly used for the designation of the trainers or two-seaters, e.g. MiG-29UB, Su-25UBG. Use fo bis is not limited to aircraft and it is not a purely aviation term. Bis use to be used for street numbering, e.g. 159bis Lenin Drive is analogous to american 159 1/2. Recall what you yell when you applouse at the opera (that is if you enjoyed it): "Bravo! Bis!". This literally means that you would like to hear the performance once again.

Finally, since it is a word and not an abreviation, it is MiG-21bis rather than all-capital MiG-21BIS. Compare it to MiG-21FM (Forsirovannyi, modifitsirovannyi).

27. Crash sequence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Fairchild_Air_Force_B...

"Crash sequence

The investigation found that as the B-52 entered its final turn sequence around the tower,
its indicated airspeed (IAS) was 182 knots (337 km/h). Although Holland applied additional
engine power after starting the turn, the late power application was not enough to maintain
the aircraft's current airspeed during the turn. Although the aircraft's airspeed indicator
was available to all four aircrew members, the aircraft's airspeed was allowed to continue to
decrease.

Eight seconds before impact, the aircraft's IAS had deteriorated to 145 knots (269 km/h),
the aircraft's bank increased past 60 degrees, and the aircraft began to stall.

Although Holland or McGeehan at this time applied full right spoiler, right rudder,
and a nose-up elevator, the aircraft continued to stall, exhibiting a behavior
known as an "accelerated stall". An accelerated stall occurs when the
stall speed of an aircraft increases without an aircraft reducing its airspeed
because of environmental factors and/or the current attitude of the aircraft
in relation to which way it's moving."

28. Jeez. Dumb. How'd he get through pilot training?
Right rudder would kick the nose down even more.
And create more drag.
When you're max power and stalling in a bank, roll out the bank.
wow

31. If you *can*
I'm not a pilot, but I know that one-wing stalls aren't always recoverable, especially when you're 250 feet AGL. There's no room.

32. That question led the Air Force to make some severe changes in the whole organization.
Conclusions

The accident investigation concluded that the chain of events leading to the
crash was primarily attributable to Holland's personality and behavior,
USAF leaders' reactions to it, and the sequence of events during the final flight of the aircraft.

Holland's disregard for procedures governing the safe operation of the B-52 aircraft
that he commanded and the absence of firm and consistent corrective action by his
superior officers allowed Holland to believe that he could conduct his last flight
in an unsafe manner, culminating with the slow, steeply banked, 360 degree turn
around the control tower.<4>

26. The pilot had a history as a hot dog.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Fairchild_Air_Force_Base_B-52_crash

"Holland apparently flew the aircraft in an extremely tight,
steeply banked turn while maintaining the low, 250 foot (75 meter) AGL altitude.

Approximately three quarters of the way around the turn, at 14:16, the aircraft
banked past 90 degrees, descended rapidly, and hit the ground, exploding
and killing the four crew members."

I am most definitely an aviation enthusiast.

Now, I don't post much in the lounge, I just lurk mostly but I would be interested in an Aviation Group.

I am a former Parts Manager of an FBO at Tamiami Airport - Cessna, Bell Helicopter.
My dad had a private pilots license when I was young and I got the chance to fly with him once a month.
Joined the EAA a year ago November
I got a ride in a Cessna 150 this past Saturday.
Plan on starting lessons (hopefully) later this year.

I love airplanes and all things aerospace related.

For some really cool videos, search "Low Pass" on YouTube

On edit to say "Oh Yeah" I lived in Palmdale, CA for 3 years starting in late 2001. I lived about 3 miles from the Skunk Works. The Palmdale Plant 42 complex along with Edwards AFB, 25 miles across the valley is where the Space Shuttles were all assembled, the SR-71, U-2, F117, B-2 and countless other planes were either developed, built or tested.
