Bulldogs make the latest "Most popular dog list"; Labradors retain the #1 spot
(http://www.silive.com/news/advance/index.ssf?/base/news/1200574816311110.xml&coll=1)

American Kennel Club's Top 10 dog breeds for 2007:

1. Labrador retriever
2. Yorkshire terrier
3. German shepherd
4. Golden retriever
5. Beagle
6. Boxer
7. Dachshund
8. Poodle
9. Shih Tzu
10. Bulldog

Where's the West Highland White Terrier? The Yorkshire is voted in at Number Two, but the Westie gets left off? This is an outrage!

4. being off the numbers list is a blessing
every time a breed spikes in popularity, its health problems, puppy milling, and the load on breed rescue groups goes up.

every damn time there's a movie with a certain breed of dog in it too.

9. Meh.
Usually these "most popular breeds" are just tallies of the number of AKC purebred registrations. They number in at a few thousand.

They're pretty much non-represntative of the millions of dogs out there.

10. I wouldn't say they're non-representative
based on my time working in and volunteering in shelters and rescue groups. Cases in point: Rottweilers. Dalmatians. when they peaked.

But you're right for pit bulls (mostly mutts, few AKC) and all the various "designer mutts" out there. Two breeds at the puppy mill were put together by accident and let's call it designer and charge more!

I'm just not even going to go into a rant here. Other boards for that.

55. omg, love that!
We used to have a Chocolate we called Maggie.

There's a brewpub in Portland (OR) called the Lucky Lab. They make "Stumptown Ale" and an assortment of designer microbrews. The pubs also display cork boards loaded with push-pinned pics of the patrons' Labs (along with pictures of people wearing their Lucky Lab tees in Labrador, Spain, Japan, all over the world.)

Dogs welcome at the pub, too. Outside, of course.

38. Dals are born runners. They need to run. We bought a special attachment for our bikes called the
K-9 Cruiser.

We would hook our Dal up to the bike and go.

Dals are very comfortable running near turning wheels.

The Dalmatian is a great dog.....if you know how to treat them.

7. Bulldog! Bulldog! Bow wow wow! Eli Yale!
http://yalebulldogs.cstv.com/genrel/042605aaa.html

New Haven, CT - Yale's search for a new mascot came to a conclusion Tuesday afternoon with the selection of "Mugsy" as Handsome Dan XVI. The English Bulldog from Hamden was picked from a field of 10 as part of Spring Fling festivities on Yale's Old Campus.

"I think his large size (69 pounds), and the fact that he's fearless and enjoys crowds makes him a great Handsome Dan," owner Bob Sansone said. "Personality-wise, you won't find a more lovable dog."

The festivities began shortly after 3 p.m. with emcees Satya Bhabha '06 and Erica Shumate '06 explaining the history of Yale's mascot - the first Handsome Dan patrolled the Yale sidelines starting in 1889. Yale is known as the first university in the United States to adopt a mascot. Handsome Dan, who has been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, is as famous as any mascot in the country.

30. There's a great book called Mutts: America's Dogs
It's a tongue-in-cheek guide to mutts, to honor them and to dispel the myth that with a purebreed you know for sure what you're getting (well, size maybe you do) but mutts are a mystery.

Their top 10 list includes
The black dog
The yellow dog
The unidentified furry (collie mix?) object

etc.

31. go with breed rescue!

If you can't find one at your local shelter - start with www.petfinder.com - most shelters and rescue groups are online there and you can search by breed and location.

Breed rescue for GSD: http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm#812, search elsewhere online. I know this one in western NY, http://www.brightstargsd.org/, they could probably direct you to Ohio folks. Actually, I think they've gotten dogs from Ohio in the past :(

And be sure you're ready for a GSD - they are way too smart and at 9 and 6yo mine have almost as much energy as they did at 2!! (mine are mostly-GSD mutts and I've volunteered for GSD rescue).

35. OK, preaching to the choir!
Though I actually think huskies stay cleaner - more water repellant coats and less doggy smell. It's kind of handy having them absolutely blow and then go in standby for awhile I think. (Used to live with a husky (not mine) and do husky rescue).

One of my mutts is an insane GSD-Husky-Lab mix, probably half GSD? Looks mostly GSD, acts mostly Husky. Killing critters, still not trustworthy off-leash for a nanosecond. He's way smarter than me. His shedding is a little more tufty and seasonsal than a Shepherd but not quite like a husky.

41. Those were my exact thoughts when I read the subject line.
:( I've only had one dog in my life that has been a purebred, and we were given the dog by someone who couldn't keep her. I've had thirteen dogs in my life, and the other twelve were shelter mutts or otherwise-homeless mutts that certainly would not have made it without us. My sweet dog Casey, who turns 8 in May, was a day away from euthanasia when we saw her at the shelter and immediately decided to adopt her. She had been in the shelter for five months, and they couldn't house her any longer.

I wish more people felt the same way.

People who pay thousands for these purebreds (while countless dogs are being euthanized every day) are out of their effin minds.

I have owned (or rather they owned me) Rotties for many years now and they are fantastic dogs. Like pit bulls, they get a bad rap from the press. Whenever a Rottweiler bits someone, the media is all over the story. But how much press is given when a cocker bits someone?

:( Being popular is not in a dog's best interest. It just means more people trying to make a buck through another being's reproduction instead of their own labor, and the poor dogs are the ones who will suffer for it.
