Remind me never to go to the annual company banquet ever again.
How bad could it be, you wonder? Free food & free drinks at a fine hotel, right?

First I had to work late, so I got to the hotel late. When I arrived management had already started giving their the speeches in the darkened auditorium, so I stepped out to the bar for a drink. "The bar is closed!" Ugh. So I stood in the back for 2 hours listening to self-congratulatory mindlessness. Once they were done, we had another half hour before dinner was served.

When I finally got to the bar AGAIN, I asked for wine. Though being a wine snob who made a living for 7 yrs selling the stuff I didn't hold much hope of a great variety to choose from. Pinot Noir? "No." Cabernet? "No." Zinfandel? "Oh, yes. We have Zinfandel." Great, I'll have a glass of Zinfandel. The bar tender turned around to pour, then turned back and passed me a glass of pink liquid. WHITE Zinfandel. Excuse me, but what is this? "Zinfandel. See the label?" No, that label says White Zinfandel. Zinfandel is a *red* wine.

Am I a jerk to expect that a bar tender at a Hyatt Regency would know the difference between Zin and WHITE Zin?

By this time they had brought out the food. It was a buffet and they had a good variety - all pretty bad. The sushi was dry, the stir fry was over done, the roast beef was under done (and cold), the pasta was rubbery. The only other choice was tortilla chips & salsa.

Every year I say I'm not going to go, every year my boss convinces to go, and every year it's worse than before.

1. No excuse for the Zin error.
Those company functions at hotels can be dreadful.

4. I think it was Beringer - OK stuff but not what I asked for.
Just one bad thing in a series of bad thigs.

3. Was the white zinfandel from a box?
That's the best kind, ya know.

It sounds like what they call a "chicken and baloney" dinner. Eat the chicken, listen to the baloney.

:hi:

6. In those situations, there are two kinds of wine: red and white
Your mistake was thinking you had any further choice...

Sounds like awesome party!

7. Any outfit that would serve sushi buffet-style...
...obviously has no clue about food.

8. You might as well enjoy it while you can,
even if it doesn't measure up to your standards of perfection. Next year they might decide to do the speeches at a bring-your-own-pizza luncheon at the workplace breakroom. That's what happened to the Holiday party where I worked after they changed CEOs.
