Pitchers and catchers report in 25 days
at which point we can dispense with this "football" silliness.

4. REDEMPTION IS AT HAND!!!!
THIS IS THE YEAR THE METS KILL EVERYONE IN THE NL!

(well they did do that last year, but this year they will keep the lead, knock off the tigers in the world series, and establish a new era of NL dominance)

But yeah, I've grown weary of hearing about the pats and the bcs and which coaches are changing jobs...This will be a very pivotal year in the MLB, and I hope most of the players got a wake-up call with this whole PED mess...But then again we still have to deal with selig since they extended his contract :puke: :argh: :scared: :nuke: :grr: :banghead:

21. Oh, thank god.
Football's yet another New York/Boston mutual masturbation. Injuries to Bynum and Ariza means our season has degenerated into Kobe scoring 45 points every night and the Lakers playing .500 ball.

The Kings suck.

Please bring on my Dodgers!

24. What the hell-a few predictions for '08...
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 06:09 PM by Arkham House
--Barry Bonds will play, probably as an AL DH--and have an OSP of at least 1.100 and at least 30 homers...
--Roger Clemens will *not* play again...
--the Yankees will collapse. Age catches up to Jeter and Arod, at least a little...no pitching...nothing much from the farm system. They'll be hard-pressed to break .500...
--the Blue Jays become the Bosox' chief AL East rival...
--the Mets come back big. They'll be on a mission, and will win 100 games--with Santana--remember him?--winning 20 of them, and Pedro 16...
--Oakland has a second consecutive off-year, and people won't talk quite so much about what a genius Billy Beane is...
--Tigers come back to win AL Central...the Royals will hover around .500 all season, before ending 75-87--a moral victory...
--Cubs repeat as NL Central champs, despite comeback year from Cards, especially Pujols, who'll have a .330-50-150 season...the Big One...
--surprise team of baseball--the Pittsburgh Pirates, who'll be in contention thru Labor Day end end up at 85-77...and it's about time...
--Dodgers win NL West, thanks to comeback years from Kent and Nomar...
--Angels repeat easily in AL West...
--World Series--the Thruway Series, Dodgers and Angels...won by Halos in seven, in the most exciting series in years..
--MVPs--Pujols, Guerrero...Cy Youngs--Beckett, Santana...
---take it to the bank...:-)...

Brewers come out on top of the NL Central, barley sliding by the Cubs

Brewers make a Cinderella Run in the Playoffs, And fight a hard fought series against the Dodgers that could go either way.

Tigers win the AL.

49. I wrote a poem about it a few years ago
It was quite obviously borked from Franklin Pierce Adams' "Baseball's Sad Lexicon." You can see how it would fit the meter:

These are the saddest of possible words:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance"
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds
Tinker and Evers and Chance
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble
Making a Giant hit into a double —
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance"

Unfortunately, I wrote it at work, and when I was fired I didn't get to retrieve it from my computer. :(

51. The refrain reminds me of a Gene Kelly/Frank Sinatra movie
where they were song and dance men in the winter and part of the double play combination of O'Brien to Ryan to Golberg during the baseball season. As ecumenical an infield as this IrishAmerican could ever hope for.

52. That's how baseball used to be
You were likely to find an infield of Sullivan, Ciccarella, Morrissey and Rabinowitz* in any given game, and it's amazing how many umpires through the '60s or so were of either Irish or Italian descent.

Everybody was nicked by their ancestry, too. Joe Garagiola wrote about how so many guys were called "Dago," "Mick," etc.

And nobody seemed to mind.

*Not Paco, though.

54. And players had to have off season jobs. The owners used the
reserve clause to tie players up for life and depress salaries. I don't begrudge the modern player his big bucks but there was a time when Major Leaguers were part of the fabric of the community.

56. Yeah, like Mays playing stickball with the kids
in the street in front of Mrs. Gooseby's rooming house in Harlem, or every Catholic priest in Brooklyn calling for prayers for Gil Hodges when he was in a slump.

I think baseball lost a lot when players stopped being our neighbors.

44. Well, my problem is, to where will my pitcher report?
My beloved Twins are looking to have a "Timberwolves season" by dealing their best player to some lucky franchise (who will undoubtedly have a "Celtics season". Anaheim already nabbed Torii, and the beat goes on. It could be a long season, and for some reason, I don't have high hopes for Liriano (remember him?)
