I had a scary thought!!! Stop me before I adopt again!!
I found myself thinking "It would be nice for the beagle to have a canine friend around the house when I'm at work." And then, there I was, perusing Petfinder.com.
I need another pet like I need a hole in the head!
needed a canine friend. He grew up in a puppy mill. He had never been inside a building when I adopted him - and he was nearly a year old then. I felt bad for him because everytime there was a dog on TV he would get nose to nose with it on the screen and bark. I really thought he missed canine companionship and was in need of a canine friend. So now there are two dogs. They get along well. That is not an issue. But my oldest is not the dominant dog - even though he is the largest. His personality is not disposed to domination - or even to competition. He has everything he needs and I try to give him special attention. But there are things he used to enjoy when he was an only dog that he no longer does. The younger dog has kidney problems and allergy challenges so often the older dog gets to go for a walk without the younger dog accompanying us. I don't regret having two dogs but I am certain it changed the very nature of my relationship with the older dog. And, yes, the older dog still (five years later) gets nose to nose and barks at every dog on TV. Sometimes I leave animal planet on just for the dogs to watch.
