I'll be typing in sentence fragments, because I'm exhausted.
5/8/77 Cornell - My first show. Mother's day picnic at girlfriend's house. GF's father giving me the hairy eyeball all day because he wanted to make sure I didn't drink anything before driving to Ithaca. Drove there in my red 1966 Ford Fairlane.
Had no idea how to get to Barton Hall. Followed the crowd and parked illegally. Weird, exciting vibe outside. Had never experienced anything like it. Smiles, and strong energy. Lots of beer and weed. Serious hippies. Standing in line, two drunk girls kept pinching my ass and giggling...pissing my GF off. Then...THUNDER SNOW IN MAY while in line. That was it....energy level rose...crowd swells....WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Blinding snow. Spontaneous applause while in line.
Made it through the doors. Old, majestic building. People filling up their bongs in the bathrooms. Kind of like an old stone barn. The dead came out. Can't really describe this music too well...except to say it was intense in a way I have never heard. Crisp, clear and controlled, but out of control at the same time. They were perfect. People were either screaming in ecstasy, or standing there dumbfounded. The sound just BOOMED, but there was no distortion. The playing seemed both fast and slow at the same time. Being Mother's Day...Phil said "Thanks Mom" after "Mama Tried". Scarlet/Fire transition was mesmerizing. Row Jimmy was amazing....this whole damn show was just perfect. Dance, dance, dance....like a fool and not caring.
The second ticket is a complete ticket from Binghamton later in the year. The crowd rush to the doors was so bad that people were getting crushed and lifted off their feet, so they just had you wave your ticket at them without ripping it just to get you in faster.
