25. When my middle daughter, the 30-year-old lawyer,
isn't feeling well, she calls me up from LA, "Mooommmmmmy, I'm SICK!" like I can do anything about it from Alaska. Some things never change no matter how old they get.

10. By her first name.
They were kind of bohemian that way. I started calling my parents by their names, because of course that's what they called each other, and my folks always said being called by the title of a biological role was pretty dehumanizing to them. They said, "How'd you like it if we only called you "Kid" or "Daughter"? When I went to school and saw how other kids did it (I had pretty much no contact with other children til kindergarten) I tried to call them 'mom' and 'dad' out of peer pressure, but they rebelled and it never stuck anyway.

15. Hmmm... interesting
My folks often called me "son," and I imagine many others did/do the same with their male issues. But I can't imagine parents calling their daughters "daughter."

I'd never considered that.

17. It's not once in a while that's the problem.
They called me "kid" a few times sure - but as a REPLACEMENT of my actual name? Like, all the time? I wonder if some really little kids even know what their parents' first names are! We're all conditioned by our upbringings, and that is what seems weird to me. "Teacher!" "Waiter!" "Officer!" "Mr. President!" "Mom!" Seems odd to use a TITLE or job description in an intimate family setting, doesn't it?

14. I remember calling her mama when I was very young, then mother.
It wasn't until just before she died that I started calling her Mom. I think she really liked that. Interesting. I've never thought about that until now. Thanks.

16. Mom when speaking to her.
I tend to refer to her as 'my mother' when I'm talking to other people about her, or sometimes her first name if I'm talking about her to someone who knows her.

22. HAD to be Ma
I grew up in New England, Mass. actually, where we have severe problems with ending sounds in words. That plus with all those extra syllables (haa-uh, caa-uh) we'd just get too tired. Ma it is!

Happy Mothers' Day all :)

...but occasionally a mama will slip out. I try as hard as I can to not call her that. She likes it too much.
