Sweeney Todd - You jerks could have warned me first

I didn't even make it a half hour. Who told Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter that they could sing? Not that they were singing, those "songs" were godawful bad.

That's 24 minutes I'll never, ever get back.

9. Yes, I know. We've seen both the recent film and the Broadway revival...

Both of them lack the magic of the original -- Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou (later George Hearn) were just magnificent. The setwork was incredible when it was staged in New York City in the late 1970s. We also saw a version of it with Dorothy Loudon -- even she was better than Helena Bonham Carter.

You might be able to get the PBS version -- we recorded it on VHS tape when it was on years ago.

17. It was a HOT HOT day in Orlando so my husband and I ducked into the cool theater.

Sometimes a movie is just a place to go -- the kids and grandkids were at Disney World.

Yeah, it was disappointing, all right.

The WORST production was the one they threw on stage in New York City with Patty Lupone.

The actors were used as musicians (believe me, it sounded like a high school band, with apologies to high schools around the world).

The setwork was non-existent, comprised of painted boxes, saw horses, and other junk -- looked like crap and sounded like crap.

The man who sang the lead, (Michael?) and later got nominated for a Tony award -- was a sorry excuse for a singer.

I think we paid $120.00 for those two tickets.

Worthless.

3. I hate musicals too but I liked Sweeney Todd.

I supposed the singing wasn't great, but it fit the mood.

but my friends that saw it with me didn't like it - it was too bloody for them... but what the hell did they expect? lol

i'm not a big fan of most musicals, but i thought this was really good. the singing isn't perfect - i don't think it was ever meant to be.

ST is one of my very favorite musicals and, properly done, is amazing. I was kind of excited about the possibility of that cast and that director doing the piece, but thought the result was a disaster. Depp and Bonham Carter were passionless, very inexpressive and lifeless, to me -- it was driving me crazy, because of the highly dramatic nature of the material. I saw a behind the scenes piece where BC said the Tim Burton told them (her particularly) to keep the face expressions and hand gestures down to a minimum to balance the theatricality of the costumes/make-up. Unfortunately, you ended up with a very flat, energyless performance. And yes, there was the truly bad singing.

A huge disappointment, all in all.

And "Sweeney Todd" is one of Stephen Sondheim's best scores. IMO.

I loved the movie. I went and bought the DVD when it came out.
