43. It's a redwood. Huntington Lake, CA.
Huntington Lake, located at 7,000 feet elevation in the Sierra National Forest, is a two-hour drive east of Fresno via State Highway 168. Huntington Lake is one of the reservoirs in the Big Creek Hydroelectric system developed by Southern California Edison Company.

Here's a wider perspective picture. I'd estimate the tree at about 70 feet in height. Pretty cool the way that branch sticks out to serve as a perch.

44. wow - yeah, the perching branch looked coniferous
but the very top where the new cones are looked solid and almost succulent - I saw redwoods as a kid but I obviously don't know the growth tips or new cones at all. and in the first pictures the perspective threw me off. Interesting.

And very cool shots!

24. I'm not very good at keeping track.
Aside from the usual common birds like cardinals and robins and such, I once saw a kestrel flying around over my yard, and I nearly collided with a bald eagle while flying a small airplane. Last fall I found a short-eared owl in the street in front of my house (it might have been hit by a car), and I took it to the Wildlife Rehab Center. We once got a screech owl down our chimney. I've also seen a ptarmigan.

I have a friend who lives near Los Padres national forest - there are some there - and she says she's seen them in her town being a nuisance: nibbling on the rubber edgings around car windows! (She's not a big birder, but they're hard to miss! Or mistake for anything else up close.)

Must have been something really big and really dead nearby!

I have SUCH a thing for vultures and ravens and miscellaneous carrion birds of all kinds. When I was a little kid, I used to go lie still in a field for hours hoping a turkey vulture would think I was dead and come down and then I could catch it and keep it as a pet.
