Darkness

Everything’s hidden


Well, no

Some things are, sure

But some things spring to life

In the darkness


My neighbor’s chandelier

Glows through their second story window

Over the entrance to their home


The power lines black against the fading sky

The moon rising serenely

The eyes of my cat

Aflame as he prowls


The fire in your heart

As you stand before me

In the darkness

Embers that sparkle under gray and black,
the light that lurks in shadow,
the beauty in uncertainty,
and its recognition,
and the knowledge of momentous glimpses--
dark against light,
transitions that are illuminating
by their darkness.

I have seen these things, and
so I enjoy your poem,
beautifully light,
outlining the dark.

Soft loneliness
in the night
suddenly waking wide from sleep
to stare out at the black
to listen straining to the silence
to think of the day gone by
to wish upon the day to come
to wonder what you've done
and question what will be
when day springs from the night
you scheme your dream of the time ahead
and put the past to bed
to let it slowly fade away
and die
soft nighttime
all alone
there's nothing here but time
so in the stillness of your heart
you slowly fall asleep
and dream...
