Does one tip one's cable installer?
He's been here for 3 hours now. Been incredibly cool and helpful. Do they get paid well? Would it be insulting to tip him?
Any advice appreciated.

Yes, Chi Chi LaRue's fine catalog of films have been quite clear about this.

13. No, there sure isn't.
I've gotten quite an education from seeing Ms. LaRue's films. I like to think I can use some of that knowledge when I'm with my boyfriend.

14. I remember one film
that made a police interrogation seem quite interesting. I sort of wish I had knowledge of the mob.

10. I wouldn't ...

Installers at the company I worked for were forbidden from accepting gratuities and could lose their jobs if it were discovered that they did.

No, they aren't paid very well.

Depending on the company, the installer may have a quota placed on him for "up sells" and get a commission based on that. So, if you want to do something nice for him, let him up-sell you something, keep it for a month so that it is reflected in his numbers, then cancel it.

18. I tip anyone I think is going above and beyond the call.
I tipped my cable guy a $20, because he was as helpful as yours. Then again, that's back when I had a good job. Wouldn't dream of tipping more than $10 now.

I can answer this question knowledgeably.

If the man or woman who installs your cable does a good job, then by all means tip him or her. The senior union members make a decent living, but the junior ones scrape by in some cities. In deciding how much to tip cable technicians, take into account how well they did the job (if it involved any cabling, did they do it neatly and with some concern for aesthetics?), the degree of difficulty of the job, and the overall professionalism and pleasantness of the person.

Also be kind enough to offer your technician a glass of water, especially during hot days.
