41. if olympic spoilers are really a big deal to someone they should
Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 01:26 PM by Ava
a: not turn the tv on until they plan to watch the event
b: not turn the radio on until after they watch
c: not get on the net until after they watch
d: not go into a public place where people who may have already watched are as they are bound to talk about it

otherwise they're bound to come across spoilers. i always avoid spoilers in my topic titles as a courtesy to others when it comes to things like this, but i also think that if someone were honestly a "you spoiled it for me you asshole" type of olympic watcher then they shouldn't be on the net if they don't want it spoiled.

just my two cents though :hi:

Relax, I realize it was an honest mistake on your part but it's going to take two weeks to get everyone trained. Then there are the immature jerks who are doing it deliberately, just to get a rise out of people.

"However, we're not going to have a big crackdown on spoilers so we suggest that if you are concerned about having the results of a particular event spoiled, you should take matters into your own hands and not hang out on the message board while you're waiting (or hang out in an area where Olympics discussion is not taking place)."

18. What are the time zones that aren't seeing things like this live?
Judging by the start time of this thread, I'd have thought it'd be prime time across the continental US. Why would NBC turn down the chance to get a live audience watching their adverts?

19. They always do that.
They want to show it in prime time in each time zone; thus, the east coast sees it 3 hours before the west coast does.

And yes, it does make many of us on the west coast mad.

Like those on the east coast, we on the west coast do like to watch things without knowing beforehand how they end.

And for the Olympics, lots of west coasters go out of their way to avoid results news before the events are aired.

33. As far as I can tell, this event was at about 7pm, PDT
I'm amazed that doesn't count as prime time, to NBC.

Do they delay the time they show things like Monday Night Football on the west coast too? I always assumed the late finish of the game on the east coast was so that it didn't start too early on the west coast, but they could show it live (ignoring Alaska and Hawaii - sorry, guys) - a compromise between the 2.

27. That happened to me tonight on AOL
They gave the Phelps result splashed on the front page. I couldn't believe it. They had avoided it for days. In fact, I mentioned that in response to you in the Sports forum.

Tonight I bought 3 golf clubs and headed to my email to respond to the seller and damn AOL had the Phelps result smack in my face, about 8:30 Pacific time, long before either race aired in the West. I was pissed.

29. Next week will be much worse
As far as I know, the track and field finals will be at night. That means morning here. But I'm sure NBC will want to show the premier events in primetime. That's 12 hour delayed, and 15 out here.

34. This thread was started at 8:23 pm Mountain time -
which would be 7:23 Pacific time. However, it's not being shown "live." The event being discussed didn't air until after 9:00 Mountain time, more than 40 minutes after this thread was posted.

NBC airs a block of Olympic programming here from 7pm to 11:30pm. Whatever we are watching is delayed from what those east of us are watching. It's not like the NFL games, which are being broadcast live in all time zones.

36. Can you imagine what NBC would do with the Super Bowl?
Or what they would have done with the moon landing? Gotta air it in prime time on both coasts...

Someone needs to tell NBC that it's 2008. It's no longer possible for them to monopolize information the way they were able to do in the past. It is now impossible not to be spoiled. One west-coast sportswriter got spoiled by the little TV in an elevator for pete's sake.

37. Spoiling is much more likely in this day and age, but -
If the showed the events at the same time across the continental US, what's airing on the East Coast at 7:00pm is airing airing at 4:00pm on the West Coast, when most day workers are still at work. The idea is to air these things during each time zone's prime time.

39. Yet somehow we all manage to watch Monday Night Football at the same time
What was especially sick was the Utah Winter Olympics. Utah, a western state, was hosting and NBC still aired it live on the east coast and on a three hour delay on the west. :wtf:

How many channels do they have anyway? Telemundo, USA, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, etc. How about devoting one of those lesser channels to a simulcast of the east coast live broadcast complete with the same commercials and keep the tape delayed broadcast on the big channel?

43. You've already shown yourself a better programme planner than anyone in NBC
yes, using one of the 'smaller' channels would be one solution; or, they could could stretch to employing a couple of editors per time zone, and switch between live events that lots of people will want to see (eg Phelps' races) and the delayed stuff. I mean, the news channels manage all the time to go over to live events, and then back to recorded stuff.

45. I'm not saying they don't have options.
But NBC is interested in doing what's best for NBC, not what's best for us.

That's why it'd be nice if spoilers were posted inside, rather than on the title line, and if the title line included a spoiler warning. :)

46. I wonder if it's really best for them, though
I believe that, if Phelps continues to win, he will be going for #8 this Saturday, perhaps breaking the Spitz record. As it stands right now, they intend to show this event to the West Coast rhree hours after they show it live to the east coast. A three hour delay on a freaking weekend? When live sports are carried at live at all hours? I have two words for this In Sane.

They are alienating the entire Pacific time zone. The Mountain zone as well, but no one really cares about them. :) How can that be smart for them?

I suppose their research has borne out that more people watch in evening blocks of time, but I really don't know. I don't know how they'll time it on the weekend either; I didn't pay attention last Saturday.
