There's something that goes bump in the night at my new house...
And it's pissing me off.

Late at night, I hear footsteps in my hallway for 20 minutes or so. I have hardwood floors so it's quite audible, and annoying. Usually, this occurs around the 3 AM time frame. At first, I thought it was just me but the other inhabitant hears it as well. Also, I had friends over for some beer over the weekend and during the night, it woke one of them up. I've ruled out my animals because the last two times, Haydes (my supreme canine destroyer) and the cat were by my side.

I don't get any strange feelings like someone's watching me. Nor has anything flown off my shelves or possessed a stuffed animal or any of that nonsense. And if some remnant of a soul feels like shaking a leg in my hallway, I really could give a shit. But this asshole is preventing me from getting a full nights rest half the time... This means war.

I'm taking suggestions. How do I get rid of it? Do I need to call Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd?

1. When you hear the noise, I suggest getting out of bed and
seeing if you can figure out where it's coming from. Identifying the source would seem to be the first step.

2. Already did that.

There's nothing there.

Edited to add: This happens when I'm awake sometimes. I've tried to find the source as I would be completely elated if it were a wild mongoose or something.

5. Since I don't believe in ghosts, I have to think there is a source
that you just haven't found. I think the key to tracking down a noise is to position your self in different places, and close your eyes and concentrate. Listen to exactly which direction the noise is coming from. Also at each positon position your head in different ways to try and getting a better fix on the direction.

7. I'm really not much of a 'believer' myself
Though, I'm open to the option. This would be the first time I've ever had something strange happen on a frequent basis.

My next step, I think, is to lay down a rug or a runner to see if the sound diminishes.

3. It's just a ghost. Don't worry about it.
You'll be safe as long as you don't fall asleep.

6. Does it happen at the same time every night?
Do the footsteps come from the same location? Do you have an old house?

I do believe in ghosts and have ended up spending more time with them than I've ever cared to, including one ghost in our present house and several in our first house. If it turns out that it is a ghost (yes, there really are such things), they can be gotten rid of fairly easily.

9. From the best vantage point,
I've noticed steps starting in the middle of the hallway movement towards the main area of the house. A somewhat slow, yet heavy, cadence. Just before getting to another room, the steps seem to shift 180 degrees and traverse to the other end of the hallway. I observed this pattern twice when being next to the hallway one evening. The first time, I entered the hallway and turned a light on. It stopped. An hour later, it began again. This time, I didn't turn on a light but just peered down the hallway from the room I was in. I saw nothing but heard plenty.

Where I sleep, I cannot hear the movement as well sice my room is not directly next to the hallway in question. But the footsteps echo through the house and I really wish it would just stop.

11. Sounds like an entity to me
A harmless one, possibly one operating in a "loop", like a snip of existence that keeps replaying like a needle stuck in a record groove. For instance, the entity could be someone who paced the hallway when s/he was alive--to burn off stress or to help an infant sleep (pacing and rocking a baby) or what have you.

If you want to get it to stop, let me know--I can share the usual methods! :hi:

PM me.

I do know the previous lady that lived there was pillpopping trash who died in the house. Her room was upstairs so maybe there's something to it. I don't know or care. I just want my sleep. Symarip needs to get his sleep or else he can't argue at work with his asshole Republican counterparts.

8. It could be possible that there some critters
under your house and maybe when they move around it sounds as if someone is walking. Why not contact a critter trapper and relocater and have them check it out.

10. I'd be inclined to agree with you

But the hallway is on the second floor, while my bedroom is on the first floor. If this was the case, I'd assume I'd be able to hear the sound of some animal(s) in my walls, inbetween the house. I have not. Furthermore, the cadence at which I hear these footsteps would lead me down a different path than thinking it was a critter of sorts... Unless Sasquatch is breaking into my place at night and hopping and skipping down my hallway.

They/it was there before you were.

I'd suggest ear plugs for the Symarips.
