Geeky wiring question
We are just about to get cable internet (we had DSL). Our house is not wired for cable TV, but the cable company is turning the internet service on for us this weekend. Is there any way I can run the wire into the house myself, or do I have to call the "professionals"?

1. Bake much, KitchenWitch?
Isn't the cable company running the cable into the house? Anyway, the cable guy can probably be bribed. Baked goods might do it, cash might work better.

Once the cable is in the house, with the cable modem hooked up, you can connect the cable modem to a wireless router and you're in business from anywhere in the house.

:hi:

2. Got a window?
No seriously, you can do it yourself. No pros required.

4. IIRC, it's possible that the cable running from the pole to the house
May be inadequate to ensure the integrity of the signal. Sure, she can run the wire within her home, but running it to the pole would likely require the cable installer (with or without the judicious application of baked goods).

9. Well, yeah. She shouldn't be climbing poles
I guess it depends on how far the cable company brings it,

11. True, it's really none of our business
I've heard that it's good exercise, like belly dancing.

3. Wire from where? The telephone pole or underground?
The cable company should be doing that labor for you to get you as a subscriber.

7. Time Warner Cable here insists on a professional install of everything.
They won't even give you your cable modem, even if your house is cabled up and "ready to go". Someone (usually a man) has to come out, and set it up for you.

I lived in an apartment, pre-cabled. All the guy did was to wire up the cable box to the TV, and do all the plugging in for me. I could have done it... but then he did "go outside" and must have thrown some kind of switch to make it all work.

Where we are now, it was not set up for cable TV. They did a complete install. Granted it wasn't the nicest install (surface cable clipped to the outside of the house, when it came inside the house it was just a cable, no nice box on the wall with plugs and that kind of stuff) but it was a free install and it didn't take them too long to do. I'll probably call them out soon because I didn't wire in my son's room for cable TV and (call me a bad daddy if you must) he can't fall asleep unless the TV is on, so he's often in our bed. I got OTA TV in there right now but he's fed up of just getting Qubo and UNC-TV Kids channel is a bit intermittent on that antenna/location so he gets annoyed when it pixellates out or freezes. At least he'll get Nick and Noggin. Probably cost me $25 but that's $25 well spent IMO since I'm not as handy as I think I am.

Mark.

8. If the MFs don't run the cable to the house
and hook up the modem, call me and I will come kick their ass. Failing that, call Skittles.
