Oy. My dog found out about skunks this morning,
My wife let her out the door at about 5:00 this morning. She took off like a shot for something in the dark. A few minutes later, we both smelled it.

Now I'm sitting here with my bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda girding myself for the de-skunking (the dog's outside).

Pray for me.

3. Couldn't find MB vid
I believe their best cure was tomato juice.

Here's an URL that recce's that and also the peroxide/baking soda/detergent mixture:

4. That's what I used - the peroxide
Two bottles H2O2, 1/4 cup Baking soda, squirt of dish soap.

I heard that tomato juice doesn't help and only adds a tomato smell.

5. The peroxide mix
will work but it may require more than one scrubbing.

Unfortunately, I know that from experience.

I recommend wearing some disposable gloves while scrubbing.

Good luck.

7. Ew. Then you'd have a stinky AND sticky dog.
And all that sugar would lock in the smell. You should have used Diet Coke.

17. I hate to say this, but some dogs don't...
I hope you have a dog that has learned to avoid skunks.

Some dogs get so pissed off the first time they get hit by a skunk, they want to teach the next skunk that comes by a lesson. My mom had a dog like that. It wanted to kill the next skunk it met, and kept trying, but never succeeded.

We once had a crazy dog who attacked electric livestock fences for a similar reason. Electric fences just made him completely furious and irrational. He'd throw himself against the wire, get zapped, and go back for more.

12. Don't use tomato juice - that's a myth
From the Indiana School of Medicine:
This week's myth concerns something very important to us -- our sense of smell. You may have heard that tomato juice can neutralize the odor of a skunk. It sure seems to work. A bath of tomato juice makes your dog smell like tomato juice instead.

In reality, the skunk's smell is so overpowering that your nose simply gets tired from the stench. The smell receptors in your nose bind the skunk odor so tightly that eventually you stop smelling it so much. This is called "olfactory fatigue." At that point, the tomato juice you've just bathed your pet with is a new smell that your nose is not used to yet. After a while, though, the tomato juice smell will go away and that skunk odor will come back.

In order to really rid your pet of that stench, you need to change the chemical composition of the odor itself into a compound that has no smell. One idea is to make a mixture of a quarter cup of baking soda per quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Add to this a little liquid detergent and you're ready to wash that smell right out of your pet. If the smell is in the air instead of on a pet or clothing, you'll have to rely on the only proven method for odor control—open a window and be patient!

15. Best cure is dishsoap, peroxide, and baking soda.
There is a recipe on the internet someplace -- I'll try to find it.

Our dog got sprayed and we used this concoction -- worked like a champ!!

16. Here you go...we used this and it works great!

Paul Krebaum, a chemist, invented a new more effective formula for de-skunking a dog. Mix in an open bucket or bowl:

1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon of strong liquid soap such as dishwashing detergent.

Mix the ingredients in an open bucket or bowl. The mixture will fizz. Wet your dog and thoroughly massage the solution into the coat. Be sure to keep the mixture out of the dogs eyes, nose and mouth. If it is necessary to apply it to the dogs face, very carefully use a washcloth or a sponge. After applying the mixture to all parts of your dog that may have been sprayed, rinse the dog thoroughly.

*Warning*

This mixture can be explosive, as it will fizz and creates pressure if it is enclosed in a seal tight container. Never store unused portion, always discard. Be sure to only mix in an open container and do not try to store or cover it in any way. Do not get the mixture into the dog's
