Untimely Deaths Becase They Didn't Accept Jesus -- true?
Not the "because they didn't accept Jesus" part, but are these anecdotes true? I got this in email from my sister (also an atheist). I didn't finish reformatting this. As you might imagine the formatting was a mess - fwd of a fwd of a fwd etc.

Here are some men and women who mocked God:

(I know this one is true.)
John Lennon (Singer): Some years before, during his interview with an American Magazine, he said:
"Christianity will end, it will disappear. I do not have to argue about that. I am certain. Jesus was ok, but his subjects were too simple, today we are more famous than Him" (1966). Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, was shot six times.

Tancredo Neves (President of Brazil): During the Presidential campaign, he said if he got 500,000 votes from his party, not even God would remove him from Presidency. Sure he got the votes, but he got sick a day before being made President, then he died.

Cazuza (Bi-sexual Brazilian composer, singer and poet), during A show in Canecio (Rio de Janeiro):
While smoking his cigarette, he puffed out some smoke into the air and said: "God, that's for you."
He died at the age of 32 of LUNG CANCER in a horrible manner.

The man who built the Titanic: After the construction of Titanic, a reporter asked him how safe the Titanic would be. With an ironic tone he said: "Not even God can sink it." The result: I think you all know what happened to the Titanic.

Marilyn Monroe (Actress): She was visited by Billy Graham during a presentation of a show. He said the Spirit of God had sent him to preach to her. After hearing what the Preacher had to say, she said: "I don't need your Jesus." A week later, she was found dead in her apartment

Bon Scott (Singer): The ex-vocalist of the AC/DC. On one of his 1979 songs he sang: "Don't stop me; I'm going down all the way, down the highway to hell." On the 19th of February 1980, Bon Scott was found dead, he had been choked by his own vomit.

Campinas (IN 2005): In Campinas, Brazil, a group of friends, drunk, went to pick up a friend. The mother of the friend accompanied her to the car and was so worried about the drunkenness of her friends and she said to the daughter holding her hand, who was already seated in the car: "My Daughter, Go With God And May He Protect You." She responded: "Only If He (God) Travels In The Trunk, Cause Inside Here.....It's Already Full." Hours later, news came by that they had been involved in a fatal accident, everyone had died, the car could not be recognized what type of car it had been, but surprisingly, the trunk was intact. The police said there was no way the trunk could have remained intact. To their surprise, inside the trunk was a crate of eggs, none was broken.

Christine Hewitt (Jamaican Journalist and entertainer) said the Bible (Word of God) was the worst book ever written. In June 2006 she was found burnt beyond recognition in her motor vehicle.

These are laughable. I just wonder if any of the "facts" are true. Anyeone know?

2. But then you have people who are all about Jesus who die
so young, so that kinda cancels that out.

23. source for the Titanic quote?
Andrews is quoted as saying that "This ship is as perfect as human brains can make her." Doesn't seem to be the sort of man who would tempt fate. Walter Lord attributed the "God himself" quote to a 'deck hand' at Southampton allegedly said to Mrs. Sylvia Caldwell. <page 73 of A Night to Remember>

And Lennon was shot by a deranged bible thumper who used to sing "Imagine there's no John Lennon" to the little children in his youth group. Kind of a self fulfilling "prophecy."

I guess this one is making the rounds so I can expect it infesting my inbox shortly.

It's a demon haunted world, indeed.

27. That might be what I'm remembering....
and it could have been a deck hand- I'm relying on memory.

Bottom line- we're all going to die someday. The character of Heather Chandler in the movie "Heathers" (Played by Kim Walker) had a line that read, "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?" Sadly enough, Kim Walker succumbed to a brain tumor in her early 30's. Tragic? Surely. Ironic? Undoubtedly. The hand of God smiting her? I'm going to go with no.....

28. Bottom line: What to see what happens when you die?
Go look at some dead things.

Yes, death sucks and I have been stung by it as much anyone my age (both parents, various family members older and younger, friends and coworkers) but I refuse to subscribe to comforting fairy tales and live my only life (as far as I know) in some kind of narcissistic delusion that we survive death.

"If we can't think for ourselves, if we're unwilling to question authority, then we're just putty in the hands of those in power. But if the citizens are educated and form their own opinions, then those in power work for us. In every country, we should be teaching our children the scientific method and the reasons for a Bill of Rights. With it comes a certain decency, humility and community spirit. In the demon-haunted world that we inhabit by virtue of being human, this may be all that stands between us and the enveloping darkness."

4. God will get you for this!
How many good celebrities die young? The odds are that they will say something that has no meaning til after they die are bound to come up.

5. Yet certain people can't see it that way.
The random young deaths are separate from the young deaths where a comment about God was involved.

I don't get it.

All I know is that I should've died by age thirty.

If crap like this is supposed to make me want to see the light it falls far short of the mark. Once again a perfect example of convervative fundies putting the FEAR OF GOD into people's hearts. They're trying to show that God strikes down those who don't accept her. Be afraid, 'cause if you don't accept God (and accept God as we do) you're gonna die. Guess what? Everyone dies.

11. ..and consider the case of actress Katharine Kepburn, who said
in an interview with Ladies Home Journal: "I'm an atheist and that's it. I believe there's nothing we can know except that we should be kind to each other and do what we can for other people." A few years later, she was struck dead at the age of 96 --no warning at all!

All you have to do is Google phrases from the e-mail and things will turn up -- everything from blogs to Snopes message boards, etc.

On edit: Here's a for-instance:

http://pinkingrid.multiply.com/journal/item/282/On_the_article_about_mocking_God

I always doubt everything in forwarded e-mails, no matter how innocuous they might appear. And if anyone sent me that e-mail, I'd probably counter with examples of the horrible things that happened to devout people.

14. Counterexample: Israel Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole (Bruddah Iz)
The beloved Hawaiian musician accepted Christ in the year before his death at age 38 from complications of morbid obesity (he weighed over 750 lbs. at one point). Funny how that didn't get on there.

I'm pretty sure I remember the quote about the Titanic from a certain movie. Maybe the writers picked it up -- or maybe the fundies saw the movie, too.

15. But if you get offed for accepting Jesus, that's cool with them.
Nothin' better than bein' martyred for accepting Jesus, or being "taken home early" by a fatal illness. God's Will, and all.

It's win-win for these believers. By Executive Decision the non-believers get taken out of circulation early, and so do the very most faithful, which leaves only the muddled masses to be sorted out by the heavenly bureacracy later on.

Sorry, I can't respect a religion where most of us are simply standing in a queue waiting to get sorted out to hell or heaven, with occasional folks pulled out of the queue early for good or bad behavior. That's no way to live, it's only a way to die. Let's jump the rails confining us and have a look around. It's a very big Universe to explore.

16. Not all Christians feel this way, obviously.
THIS Christian thinks that e-mail is repulsive bullshit.
Supposedly God gives us free will, that's what any Christian with an iota of sanity would try to argue. This e-mail goes against that completely.

17. Counterexample: JESUS HIMSELF.
If not believing in God gets you offed at a young age, why did Jesus die in his 30s?

Oh, while we're at it, if life begins at conception, are we to assume all aborted babies are atheists?

20. Makes me glad I'm a Buddhist
I don't think anyone sends around vile e-mails about people who died horribly because they didn't believe in the Dharma.

Well, there's that "personality test" that claims to come from the Dalai Lama (it doesn't), but that's downright benign compared to tripe like this.
