Will any of the web-based email programs (Yahoo, GMail and others)
allow you to pull your mail down into Windows mail or something similar? I'd like my mail program to let me know when I have mail, rather than having to constantly refresh.

Is this possible? (I can't find anything like it on Hotmail)

1. GMail can work with a mail program like Thunderbird
I haven't tried it myself, but am assured by other geeks that this works.

:hi:

2. This might work...
Hotmail allows you to forward to another address and it will keep a copy in the inbox for me. I could forward to Gmail and have Thunderbird or another program check for me.

Thanks!

I'll check it out.

3. That was fun...not
gmail won't hold my settings. I check POP forwarding and save, come back and it's unchecked. x(

This was supposed to be not complicated. Bleh.

5. I just don't understand why gmail won't hold my POP forwarding settings
Windows Mail is configured correctly, it's just that gmail can't remember that I said I wanted POP forwarding enabled. x(

9. I'll see what I can find in the help section
I've set it up exactly as shown on the gmail website. I wonder if the fact that I'm using Firefox has anything to do with it? (not saving the settings problem)

11. Thunderbird has Gmail functionality built in.
It's really easy to set up. You just need your name & password.

8. Yahoo charges for the privilege, but...
Edited on Tue Sep-30-08 09:59 PM by TreasonousBastard
YPOPS is free and allows you to use any email client and connect. I used YPOPS for years with Yahoo and Eudora and it worked great.

I finally broke down and paid for direct POP3 access to Yahoo to get rid of the ads-- they were embarassing when I was emailing from some place where I had to use webmail. (And once in a while the Yahoo servers did something funny that stopped the connection for a few hours)

Now I get unlimited email storage and decent POP3 access, with the search functions the other goodies Yahoo has. And no ads. Cheap at 20 bucks a year.

On edit--

I just checked GMail, since some say it has POP3 access. Well, it doesn't, but it has IMAP acess, which is as good. Most of the time. Just be sure your mail client can handle IMAP if you go Google. Most can, but some can't, and others have small problems with it. It's free, though.

(Although you might have Google looking over your shoulder grabbing marketing hints from your mail.)

12. I'm taking the Scarlet O'Hara approach
Tomorrow's another day. I'll try once more to get gmail to save the POP forwarding settings so I can retrieve mail into Microsoft mail. If that doesn't work (and I'm not holding my breath), I'll try downloading another mail program. The problem is GMail. I check the POP forwarding option and save only to go back and find it's unchecked, over and over. It's maddening.

13. You've nailed the problem: Gmail.
Gmail requires specific settings on your email client. The biggie is that it's picky about leaving the email on Gmails' servers - in other words if you use POP it wants it off their server.

Article reference: http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-POP-and-IMAP-en/browse_thread/thread/dba2ada76af1178d?hl=en#

But then Gmail is also supposed to support IMAP as well apparently, so maybe setting up to use that might work.

Hope this helps, Mark.

16. Thanks!
Tried IMAP as well and no go. I even selected the old version (with fewer options) and it still will not hold my selected settings even though they're saved. I'm writing this one off. Not worth the headaches.

15. Gmail works with Outlook, as does Yahoo (I think)
Usually, if you search their help pages, you'll find some kind of tutorial for setting it up. I could have sworn I downloaded hotmail to Outlook once upon a time.

17. Thanks!
I used the tutorial and they have screen shots for setup in various programs. The problem is on the GMail side. I select POP forwarding and save in GMail. I go back to settings and my selection is gone.
