I have to get to work tomorrow. My tank just went below the half gallon line and I went out to the gas station to try to get some gas but none to be found. I came back home before I ran out in the dark.

1. Just been in your shoes.
Gas was hard to find in Houston.

Just got our power back on Friday evening.

Hope everything is OK.

2. I am so sorry.
My troubles are so much less than others.

Tell you the truth I am emotional because there are people that I know that are sick. My co-worker who was helping me train in former area (he got a deserved promotion) had a massive heart attack. Last night I went to my high school's homecoming and I saw my former band director that now has Multiple Sclerosis. I am only 28 so he should be about 38 - but this disease makes him act physically like a 60 year old and it saddens me because when he was my teacher he was fresh out of college... and then today another co-worker was taken to the hospital from work. I have been crying all week.

4. Wouldn't that make them just "stations"?
But seriously, I feel your pain, and have been wondering why the M$M has been so slow to pick up on what one would think would be a no-brainer of a major story. :eyes:

16. My first thought was that it makes them 'mini-marts'
:)

It's surprising that it's not been covered more - we saw a little bit in the news about gas shortages in TX, and then that article last week asking whether the Georgia/Bama game should be cancelled, and then it just disappeared. Obviously, there's been other big news, but people running out of gas deserves a couple of column-inches, IMO...

17. Rachel Maddow reported on it tonight
I'm not surprised the MSM isn't picking it up. They ignored 2 million in Ohio without power for nearly a week too. I had to check the local tv websites to find out what was going on down there so I could tell Lelapin when she might get power back...

28. NPR has reported fairly broadly on both stories
But I guess they're not considered main stream media.

6. where in NC are you CP?
I'm in Boone, and could get 87 octane this morning, though the station was limiting purchases to $50 (not an issue in my little Volvo thankfully). I hear that things are getting better (but not yet great) in Asheville.

Sorry to hear of your confluence of troubles. The march of time sure can be wearing on us...

I hope that you find some gas tomorrow, and that other bright times follow.

7. I am crying for other people that I know mostly...
Edited on Tue Sep-30-08 11:15 PM by CarolinaPeridot
I'm in Greensboro.

I love people. I am a people person and I don't like it when people I care about are sick and I can't do anything about it.

I am less worried about myself. I will get gas, it just made me cry because I was trying to avoid the tears. And when I got to the final pump and no gas, everything just hit me.

31. I'm in Greensboro too.
Things I've noticed. Hess and Citgo seem to be having the gas. Exxon seems to be always out. BP - I got lucky last night with them. Sheetz can run out from time to time. The gas stations that are now Shell that used to be Crown seem to have gas. Also independents seem to have given up: Quick Shop on Burlington Road hasn't had gas since Ike hit, and Gastown near Sedalia has taken down its prices and pumps are off.

This is when www.greensborogasprices.com can be used in reverse... look for the highest gas prices.

Regards, Mark.

14. I'm 30, and I've never seen it before either...
The implications are actually frightening, I mean, this shortage was created by severe weather, but what if the next one happens because of a true supply crunch? What will we do when gas stations run out of gas, and no more gas is shipped in?

15. Then we absolutely shut down.
I can do about 70% of my work from home. The other 30% I actually have to be in the building to check things. Other than that I would be fine.

26. I'm 69 years old and I have seen it in the '70s in South Florida.
Long lines and even/odd number rationing. And I was complaining that the price was too high at $1.25 a gallon.

23. We seem to be easing out of the crunch in the western 'burbs..
I filled up yesterday morning and there were no lines, and for the first time in a while the same station still had gas when we got home in the afternoon. Cars were lined up, but the Quik Trip folks had cones out and employees to direct the traffic.

I still see no mid-grade or premium around; thank goodness I don't need that anymore.

25. Yup, we're all in the same boat here in the Atlanta area.
But it is starting to look a little better. At least, many gas stations have gas without long lines. I was fortunate yesterday morning to be able to fill up at a station near my house. Pulled right in with no lines. But, of course, that was at 6 a.m.

The gas is the final straw. You've got more compassion than most and your friends are lucky.

My ex in-laws are in Greensboro. He's 80 and she's 75. I hope they're able to get what they need. I should call them tomorrow.

19. Down here in SC they have been posting police at the two stations with gas
At one station you had to be a resident or no gas. Since Sept 19th gas got scarce.

20. How much gas would there be if people that lived close to work didn't drive?
Most of my neighbors live within 3 miles of their job.

Most of them drive every day.

I just don't get it.

Could someone explain it to me?

24. What i don't get get is why is there no gas just in the SE
Houston-Galveston I understand because of Ike. My friends in Ohio and on the West Coast aren't having any difficulties getting gas. There's certainly no problem in Austin. So what is the excuse?

27. In upstate SC, I feel your pain. I'm about down to 1/2 tank and if I find any,

I'm going to fill up. Trouble is every station seems to be out.

I started a thread on this in GD.

29. Yes, it's starting to be worse here in the Triangle
Wednesdays I usually get gas. I have 1/2 tank right now. I'll go get gas later on and report back what it was like. I see more and more stations with 1/2 their pumps blocked off.

Last week, the lady who owns my country store about 1.5 miles from my house told me that they were getting 1/2 their usual order from their distributor.
