Tucson couple pleads guilty in dogfighting case

http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/hourlyupdate/263707.php

A Tucson couple arrested last year on dogfighting related charges pleaded
guilty Wednesday just as their bench trial was scheduled to begin.

Juan Verdin pleaded guilty to attempted dog fighting as part of a deal that guarantees he
will receive a probationary sentence of no more than three years. If Verdin successfully completes probation,
the charge will be designated a misdemeanor. If he violates probation, he could receive up to two years in prison.

Because they pleaded guilty, prosecutors agreed to stop civil forfeiture proceedings against the pair so they are no
longer in danger of losing their home. The pair will not be allowed to own animals for at least 18 months.
After that time period is over, they will have to seek the judge’s permission to own animals.

Pima County sheriff's deputies seized at least 150 dogs during raids on Feb. 19, along with $10,000
in cash and more than 60 firearms varying from revolvers to assault-type guns, officials said.

Last week Juan Verdin pleaded guilty to child abuse in another matter.
He was indicted on 11 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor in May after
detectives investigating him for the dogfighting found several images of prepubescent
children engaged in sexual acts on his computer.

2. Dogfighter with child porn basically gets probation.
All is just and fair in the world. :eyes:

4. Well, he will probably get probation in the dogfighting matter.

It sounds like he hasn't been sentenced yet but reached a plea agreement. The report makes it sound like the judge will be bound by the plea agreement, which would be highly unusual, but I don't know, AZ state laws may allow it. Regardless he should have had more on those charges IMO.

It sounds like he hasn't been sentenced on the kiddie porn charges yet. Hopefully he will get something more appropriate than stacked probation. :eyes:

And oh, big surprise that there is a link between abuse of animals and abuse of humans.

5. I am reluctant to sentence anyone to prison,
but this one needs some timeout from us.

6. It is not kiddie porn
he molested a child.

Some people need to be tossed into the pitbull pit covered in bacon fat.

7. Hyperbole
It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression,
but is rarely meant to be taken literally.

8. I read the article and didn't see the part where he "molested" a child.

All I saw were charges under the child abuse (exploitation) statutes for possession of images of children engaged in sexual acts.

Did I miss something?

9. Would this pitbull pit be state or federal?
