Would you be willing to donate a kidney?
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 07:58 AM by nomad1776
hypothetically would you be willing to do this? Would their be conditions? for example would you be willing to give to someone that failed to take care of themselves or would that matter. Who would you be willing to donate to?

1. Very thought provoking question...
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 07:59 AM by philboy
If my kidneys were both entirely healthy, I would be willing.

I think I would still be willing if the person's kidneys were damaged because of abuse, but I would need some kind of assurance that the abuse would end.

Also, I would only donate to someone close to me.

This was a very good question...I see it getting a lot of responses. :hi:

2. Thanks
I have thought about this issue some. I, like most people, like to think of myself as a good person. However I am not sure I could go through with this. I try to take good care of myself and giving away half my kidney function, it's just not sure I could do it. I greatly admire those that have.

3. My cousin, who is my age (50), received a donated kidney...
from her mother when she was young.

She is doing very well with it, and her mother is now in her 70's, and still healthy.

I guess it all depends on the circumstances.

In my opinion, it does not make you a bad person at all if you are unwilling to donate a kidney. It is a very personal decision that is entirely based on specific circumstances.

5. I think if you're going to be willing to give it
it has to be w/o conditions.

And yes, I would.

12. Yep.
My best friend only has one kidney, so if he needed it and I was an eligible donor, I would definitely donate it. I would still donate it even if it wasn't him who needed it though.

19. i would only be willing to do it for a great deal of money
i could not take the chance of having my healthy body cut into and a body part removed and later on it turns out i coulda used that body part

in a world free of economic coercion, no, i would never donate a kidney while i was living

in the real world of economic coercion, it's easy to imagine circumstances where for the right price i would have no choice but to say yes

for those of you who are more altruistic, that's great, but yelling at me won't change my answer, a nd the idea that peer pressure/scolding would cause a woman to give up a body part is not a world we want either so...save the yelling for another day

a question was asked and i answered it HONESTLY based on what i would really do rather than what i would like to imagine i would do to look good in the local news

20. I would for my baby, husband, brother, mom, dad, and my niece and nephew.
And possibly for my two best friends. I wouldn't put any conditions on it. I know them well enough to know that they would cherish the gift.
