6. No , too bombastic, and shallow , I personally hate it
Listen to Bach or Bruckner instead , and no , the later is NOT bombastic , and whoever thinks so or says so has no ear.

A ticket to a Bach passion (anyone !) , I would give an arm and leg for that

26. Hate? Jeez, that's a little strong dontcha think?
I've sung the St. Matthew and the St. John's Passions both as a Choir Member and a Soloist.....I prefer the B Minor Mass myself.....and any number of Cantatas...maybe I have a short attention span....I also play trumpet, so bombast is a good thing in my book....

And Messiah...well...The two sold out performances we have every year help keep us performing in a first rate concert hall instead of a local High School Auditorium.

It is neither, of course. Delightful melodies, great chorus work.

It is wonderful to sing.

It's very moving.

My son likes it and he is only 12! Here's some vids, unless you want to wait and see it with no preconceptions.

If you want a preview of a non-Orchestral (not done by choir or orchestra) try this... their version of the Hallelujah Chorus...
(I suppose it's sacrilege for some, but... it's kind of fun, too.)

whoops, the buffereing is really poor.

Here's an orchestral version

15. Probably, but I'm sure the choir/orchestra will be too big.
It was meant for a small choir and orchestra. But you know, people like that wall of sound noise, even with the Messiah.

we've certainly become used to the 'wall of sound' with Messiah!

30. Yep - the ol' "If sex with two people is good, sex with 80 should be more good!" meme
I don't know why they do those huge-ass Messiah performances. The music is so intimate, and clearly written for small forces.

But, we like BIG BIG BIG!

It's also impressive to know that Handel composed the entire piece locked in his room in just 24 days.

29. If you like classical music, you will likely enjoy it. If you don't, you still might,
but the chances go down.

But, in terms of "serious" music, the Messiah is about the most easily digestible of the genre - nothing too challenging, nothing too boring, nothing too weird.

35. Messiah performances vary enormously from one another.
You can hear performances that are lush and full, like a romantic composition. Sometimes the work is performed on Baroque instruments, making it sound lighter and more delicate. Certain conductors like to keep tempos really brisk, while others like to take their time. Some soloists embellish their arias with a lot of ornamentation, and others do very little.

Of course, the enjoyment of the work depends on whether or not you like the particular style and interpretation that you're hearing.

Whose performance are you attending?

42. I don't know. He does not perform often; in fact the last time I KNOW he performed
was during the grand opening of the Bass Performance Hall downtown. He may have done a concert there, but I could not tell you for certain. I would love to see him play though.

I went to a choral concert there a few weeks ago that featured the combined choirs of Broadway Baptist, Arborlawn United Methodist, and First United Methodist churches, as well as the three organists of those churches playing on this fabulous organ. Broadway is Cliburn's church; I am a member of First UMC. It was a great evening, but I was disappointed that our organist did not get to show off on the organ. However, Van Cliburn was in the audience.
