My oven won't light and tomorrow's Thanksgiving

Thank heavens I was going to bake some pumpkin bread tonight. At least I found out the oven is busted ahead of time, instead of right before putting in the turkey tomorrow.

It looks like I may have to tote the turkey, etc. to my daughter's apartment on the other side of the county. Or something.

Drat Maytag, they make the worst products. Our old Maytag refrigerator was a piece of crap from day 1. This Maytag Performa stove is only 6 1/2 years old. There's no excuse for this. The stove burners and the broiler all work -- just not the oven. Our microwave is too small to manage a turkey.

1. We're having a problem with ours, too.
The oven turns on and gets hot, but there's a gas smell that wasn't there before. We're afraid to use it until the gas company people come take a look at it. I guess it's a good thing Mom decided to make Thanksgiving dinner this year. :(

2. So, about those ads with the Maytag repairman who has nothing to do...
Maybe he's busier than we have been led to believe.

4. I think mine is full of cat food again. won't maintain temp. I have to keep restarting it,
You could try cutting the bird up an parboiling then bbq, or stove top roasting like a pot roast - wouldn't be pretty but I bet it would taste good.

I lost my oven right at T-day a couple years ago. Must be a planned obsolescence thing. ha

6. one time we had to haul it across the street to our neighbor's house
when the oven quit.

The neighbot had moved into assisted living and my mom had the key.

We ate a wild turkey that had some shot in it, prior to the "real" turkey being done. It was kind of funny.

7. That happened the first year we were married...
our neighbor let us bring our turkey over to his house and roast it after his was done! Just imagine - Mr. Debi walking across the street carrying a 15 lb. turkey that's steaming in the November weather!

Hope all works out for you and yours. :hi:

8. Once upon a time Maytag put quality before profits
and the profits rolled in. Then in the early '90s a new CEO changed direction and focused on profits. Their quality went from best to worst and profits crashed. Within a few years they were out of business having been bought out by Whirlpool.
We have an old Maytag washer & dryer. Probably 20 years or better and never one lick of a problem. Those workers that made Maytags had a huge amount of pride in their work and it killed them to put out an inferior product.

9. A gas oven, I assume. What have you tried in order to light it?
I'll assume the pilot is out, or more likely given it's age, it has a peizo-electric sparker?

Maybe I can talk you down, get this puppy lit....

10. It's made so the oven can't be lit manually
but thank you so much for your offer.
And thank you everyone else for your suggestion!

I tried last night, but the ignition thing won't allow gas to flow unless it sparks, according to the instruction manual. What a lousy design. I've lit plenty of gas ovens manually in the past.

My younger daughter's boyfriend, the mechanical engineering major, took part of the igniter apart and looked at it last night. He said an element burned out and needed to be replaced, but he didn't have the parts or training to do it.

However...GOOD NEWS! :fistbump:

My other daughter and her boyfriend are bringing over his huge old microwave/convection oven, which should be able to handle the bird. The Tofurkey and Quorn Turk'y will have to take turns in my little toaster oven, and just about everything else can be microwaved or made on the stove top.

I've never used a microwave/convection oven, so it should be entertaining to try figuring out how to time the cooking.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

12. You can do it! Last night, Top Chef, microwaves and toaster ovens for turkey!
I'm not kidding, that was the challenge!

And they did quite well, they took the bird apart, of course.

Best wishes, let us know how it goes!

13. We did it!
The turkey got cooked in the borrowed convection microwave and came out great. Everything else was made on the stove top, the microwave, or my little toaster oven. The big dilemma was how to keep everything warm until serving time.

Since the broiler in my oven still worked, I used it to heat the oven up. Then I turned it off and put all the side dishes in there, covered with foil, to keep them warm. It worked out pretty well.

And the Quorn Turk'y -- baked in the toaster oven -- was fantastic. Since 3 of us are vegetarians, I wanted something that tasted better than the dreadful Tofurkey we had last year. The Quorn tastes very good and is a perfect alternative.

Thank you all, and hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

14. Hey-Yeaaaa!
Glad that worked out!

So the broiler is working and the oven doesn't....I'm still trying to fix it in my head!

Thermocouple, maybe, but these new things with igniters, not so sure...
