How many Oscar picks did you get WRONG?
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 12:08 AM by Paragon
I got EIGHT wrong - specifically: Art Design, Costume Design, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Film Editing, Short Film - Animated, Sound Mixing, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay).

Who knew Lord of the Rings would win in EVERY category it was nominated in?

1. None :-)
Since I didn't make any advance Oscar picks, none of mine were wrong

And, as usual, my guesswork pays off in the short film and documentary categories - I can't miss.

EDIT: what I got wrong:

Actor in a Supporting Role
Cinematography
Costume Design
Foreign Language Film
Animated Short

19 of 24 - damn, so close

Full disclosure, my picks are here.

3. I got four wrong
Here's my proof from the DU contest:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x816580#820644

I missed:

Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Supporting Actor, Best Documentary Short, and Best Live Action Short Film.

Did anybody beat me? I blew the tiebreaker by an hour, so if anyone has 20/24 with a better tiebreaker time, or 21+, they win.

But damn, I guessed randomly and I did pretty good.

Knew LOTR would win every category

4. mrs. unblock and i both agreed lotr rotk would win all 11 oscars
some years, one movie stands out so much that it sweeps, not because it was best in any particular category, but because the movie as a whole was so much better (in the popular-with-the-inside-hollywood-crowd sense, at least) that it has its own momentum.

unfortunately this means that the blockbuster wins even in categories where it wasn't necessarily the best.

sorta like guilt by association, or in this case, victory by association.

i'm sure it was a great flick, but did it really beat out some of the others specifically in, say, costume, makeup, soundtrack, or editing?

best picture, director, sure, but.....

then, like i said, the movie was such a standout, it was sure to sweep, deserving or not. that's just the way the oscars work some years....
