from their singing?

Then with some other groups it's obvious: For example, Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls." It's obvious they are Brits.

Edited for clarity

1. If a fly lands on their beer you can tell.
The Englishman will push it away, ruined.
The Irishman will flick the fly and drink the beer.
The Scotsman will pick up the fly, hit it on its backside saying spit it out, spit it out now.

2. Most don't sing with the accent.
Most will sing with an "American" accent.

It kinda sucks, IMO. I like when they sing with the own accent. :)

13. Sometimes you can tell that they're trying to do an American accent but failing.
The lead singer of the Cranberries doesn't sound particularly Irish, but she sounds weird

14. Yeah...
and of all the accents in the world, that's my favorite.

I wish Snow Patrol sounded more Irish.

9. Don't forget The Jesus and Mary Chain or Big Country. Both very Scottish in their own way.
:P

8. Because they're all trying to sound American, at least to some degree.
It's not necessarily a conscious thing, just the fact that rock music is largely an American invention.

On the other hand, it is often possible to hear the difference if you listen closely. For instance, a side-by-side comparison between U2 and Big Country (who I like to think of as "the Scottish U2":P):

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd1mKaxN6EY

"Harvest Home" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deelprC1w8c
