I finally narrowed down my application list, and I've finished most of my college applications
I should have all my applications submitted by the end of this week, but I'm still undecided about two.

I'm applying to or have already applied to:
UCLA
Berkeley
NYU
Harvard
UT Austin
Alabama

I'm considering Ithaca College and Boston University.. I've filled out apps for both, but am not sure whether I'm going to send them in yet. Application fees are crazy expensive! I'm looking to major in film.

I'm freaking out dudes and dudettes! :scared:

3. I love Ithaca and the school is awesome.
But keep in mind how hard it would be to get there from home, and how hard it would be to travel back home.

It's a 5 hour bus trip from there to NYC. Or a 1 hour bus to Syracuse, and from there you catch a connecting flight to NYC. Then from NYC you head home.

I'd love to have you stopping through here a few times a year. But do you really want to deal with that? For Ithaca College?

I'd choose Boston in a heartbeat.

and i have a good shot at getting in there.. whereas several of the schools on my list are extremely hard to get into.

where i end up really depends where i get accepted. NYU has an absolutely AMAZING film program.. and i'd love to end up there, but all the schools on my list other than alabama(which doesn't offer a film degree) have great film programs(including boston university and harvard).

it's all so stressful and scary :(

49. my sister went to NYU
she really liked it, and it was fun to visit her there, hearing the subway rumble underneath her dorm... and the great restraurants and coffe shops, let alone Wash. Sq. Park...

you have some nice choices on there, Ava. But hell, Berkeley would be great as well, and isn't UCLA's film school where Spielberg and Lucas went?

Very exciting!

My son I think set his school record...19 college applications (and fees - it was like paying for a semester up front!) It was worth it for him to have all the great choices he did!

All the best...sending good college vibes your way.

46. Is that Southern California or South Carolina?
I'm guessing the former, though it'd be awesome if the latter was on your list, because Columbia would suck a little less if you were here. But I couldn't, in all conscience, recommend anyone to move here, especially someone who is trying to escape from Redneckistan. Being a college town, Cola is a little less (what's a politically correct alternative to "retarded"?) than the rest of South Carolina, but that's not exactly setting the bar very high.

35. It has a rugged urban feel now that I don't remember in the '90's.
The "Keep Austin Weird" campaign took off then, because a bunch of conservatives calling themselves the "Guadalupe Beautification Project" tried to kick out all of the artsy local businesses and install corporate-owned stores. I think Keep Austin Weird saved the Drag.

As far as the rest of the city goes, it's loaded with places to see and things to do. What's nice is that you're not in a such a large city that you're lost in the shuffle, but there's just enough urban there to keep you going. It was a pretty wicked cool place to go to school... especially as an RTF Major. ;)

Good luck!

25. location had a lot to do with where I chose to go to school for my undergrad
I had better offers at some places, but I ended up going to Northwestern, in part, because I wanted to live in Chicago. It was a good choice. College isn't only about studying (though I did far too much of that, in retrospect), it's also about loads of new experiences and learning about ways that other people, and you, can live.

44. it sucks that you have to pay for that stuff
I hate paying for applications.... many times I haven't applied for things, just because of the application fee. However, I think if it was something that could massively effect the next 4 - 5 years of my life, I would have to think twice about it. Just out of curiosity, what are fees like these days? The last time I applied to schools was 2001, and then I think it was usually between $25 and $50. There ought to be some kind of subsidy for these things.... or just have free higher education for all.

I got a MS in journalism there, and though it was almost 30 years ago, I still live in the area and I'm still somewhat familiar with the school. I have no idea which school you should choose, but I can give you some information about this school. It is a large university, lots of students, and it's an urban campus. It's quite a busy, bustling area. It's a college city with lots going on and lots to do and get involved in.

If you want any more information about BU, just ask and I'll try to help. :-)

60. If you have Harvard on the list, why not Yale?
Despite the ever so slight difference in name status, Yale is an infinitely better place to get an undergrad education. There simply really is no comparison. I would skip Harvard and apply to Yale, if you want to have one gold plated ivy on the list.

62. Still does have a top drama school. Harvard no.
but I'm not sure how either rate in Film.

Best of all, Yale is 1.5 hours by train from New York City!

67. yale isn't very homeschooler friendly
in order to apply as a homeschooler you must submit two recommendations from teachers outside of home.. such as at a commmunity college. all of my courses have been taken at home or online, so i have no teachers to write those recommendations.

64. My mother used to want me to go to UT Austin.
Ultimately it's way too big a school for me, so I'm not bothering. Besides which, I could not stand being out of the north--I need my snow and four seasons!!

77. Whatever school that takes you will be very fortunate indeed!
If film is your bag, I'd recommend UCLA. It has an awesome film school. Coppola and Jim Morrison both went there. Different times, of course.
L.A. is also the place if you're serious about filmmaking. It has a motion picture infrastructure (studios, equipment rental houses, talent) that none can match.

Good luck with whatever choice you make!

:wow:

Back when I was in your position, the only Ivy with any film department was Columbia.
