I don't like Indian food, so I wouldn't know what to get. Any input is appreciated.

2. Just about any Indian cookbook by Madhur Jaffrey
If the recipient is a novice at this cuisine, I recommend the classic "Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking."

3. Ditto! The very best recipe I have is from that very book
Photocopied, so complete with curry stains from my cooking it. Need to make that again. (Delhi-style lamb cooked with potatoes)

8. I agree with this recommendation
Madhur Jaffrey is the queen -- my copy of her "Indian Cooking" is nearly worn out. Indian cooking can be challenging, but she makes it approachable.

7. I have two by Julie Sahni that I like very much:
Classic Indian Cooking http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Indian-Cooking-Julie-Sahni/dp/0688037216/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229476004&sr=1-1

and Moghul Microwave http://www.amazon.com/Moghul-Microwave-Cooking-Indian-Modern/dp/068808334X/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229476004&sr=1-5

HEY - I heard all you peeps sneering at the microwave cookbook - but don't laugh. Indian cooking can be pretty time-consuming. For "Moghul Microwave" she ONLY included dishes whose quality and taste are not at all compromised by preparing them in the microwave - in some cases the quality is even better than when prepared by traditional methods. Often, significantly less fat is required, making those recipes healthier. The time savings can be HUGH!!1
