Is it okay to use a laser pointer to f*ck with your cat's head?
My wife came home with one of those little laser pointers used in presentations. Our son first used it on the cats...they freakin' loved it. Total focus...hunting, stalking, crazy-ass behavior, determined to catch that damned red dot. Even after we'd turn it off, they'd still hunt for the red dot for another ten or fifteen minutes. It seems harmless enough. Right?

It sure is entertaining...like having a real live remote control animal! They'll follow that red dot ANYWHERE! But they seem so disappointed when I finally have to turn it off because I'm laughing so hard I've gotta go pee.

1. The cat where I'm staying just stares at the hand holding the pointer
not at the dot.

Frickin' waste of money

19. That's what my younger cat does.
The look he gives me when I try it says, "What do you think I am, a moron?"

25. Doesn't matter, because they're gonna do it anyway!
They don't care whether it's OK.

18. gotta let it wander into their range
Esther will sit and watch it and as soon as I bring it down within her range, she'll go nuts trying to grab it, then take it out of her range, rinse and repeat.

20. I've tried that
They paw at it. And figure out they can't touch it so lose interest. I once got Sophie interested in hand shadows on the wall...but after running up and not being able to feel anything with her paw AND after looking between me and the wall, she figured out the game and left.

21. then you've got yourself some smart cats
didn't they also figure out those bird calls i posted way back when? You better watch out, as soon as they figure out how to get their own food, you're toast.

22. Oh they are trouble.
Sophie already managed to lock me in the bathroom and turn off the light while I was taking a bath.....I've had to hide the TP from them because of them unrolling them and they still try to get at it....Sophie also tried to close the refrigerator door while I was looking in it....

24. how in the world did she manage that?
the best Esther has learned to do it open the bathroom door if it's not shut completely. Of course this is the same cat whose new favorite activity is trying to stick her head up my coat sleeve.

26. She pushed the door closed from the inside...
something she is fond of doing. Then she started meowing to get out. I wasn't paying attention (door closing isn't unusual with her) so she jumped up on the sink. She started pawing at the door knob.
Couldn't get the door knob open, so in frustration she pawed at the nearest thing she knew she could flip---the light switch (she's turned on a different switch before). Bink. Instant darkness.
She got let out after that..
In case you haven't figured it out, Sophie is THE DEVIL...

7. that's the ONLY thing my cat will play with
she ignores her other toys, but she LOVES chasing the laser pointer. She'll hide behind the coach, peeking out ever so carefully, waiting for the unsuspecting dot to pass by when she'll lunge out for it.

11. Just don't point it at the cat's face is all.
It can cause eye damage. Otherwise, sure, fun for you, fun for kitty, it is a win-win situation.

14. The best cat toy that I've ever had was a single, unprocessed peacock tailfeather.
Our cats went INSANE going after that thing. Apparently, it smelled like "bird," so they'd chatter and chirp at it, and if we put it out of their reach, they'd cry and try to jump and get to it. We did evil things like sticking it in a nail hole way up high on the wall, and not close to any furniture, just so we could watch them try to leap 6+ feet straight up to get it, lol.

Real, undyed, unprocessed bird feathers = CAT HEAVEN.

:hi:

23. I was reading one of those informational books
about Jack Russell Terriers once, and it warned NOT to ever use laser lights to play with the dogs because it could cause a severe nervous disorder. Of course, they can be a bit nervous anyway.

Want to drive a Jack Russell Terrier mad? Rearrange the furniture !

I don't know about cats with the laser lights, though. They seem to enjoy them.
