9. Quitting, isn't as bad as it use to be
its just a matter of staying on the wagon...

I'd usually have a freak out day/or two during my 4th of 5th day of non-smoking, but the last few go arounds, my irritability has been damn near non-existant.

My longest stretch of non-smoking was 11 months....I've done a lot of stints, of 3-5 months at a time, but I always fall off...but, I'm going to keep trying, til I get it right...:)

11. May I make a suggestion Jitterbug
Don't resolve to lose weight; resolve to lose (XX) pounds by 31 December 2009. You decide what that amount will be. Don't resolve to get more exercise; resolve to walk at least 45 minutes a day at least three days a week. And write those resolutions down and put that list somewhere you will see it everyday. Don't mean to be a poop, just trying to help.

I would love to finish a story about a WWII veteran I have been fiddling with for years. I've started it several times, rewrote and rearranged and just have not finished it.

16. general resolutions don't happen
anyone who has studied psychology, even pop psych, can tell you the same

specific resolutions that will happen are a private matter not to be shared with the internets so i'm not going to list my future resolutions here

however, just for example from the past --

"learn new stuff" won't happen because you can watch bullshit on the history channel and kid yourself that you've learned something, "learning enough of a language to get around on my next trip" does happen because there's a deadline and you'd better listen to that audio tape or talk to that tutor or friend in the new language every day if you expect to be able to ask directions in a foreign land

same with exercise -- get more exercise is a resolution that won't ever happen, however, for several years i resolved to walk 45 minutes a day 6 days a week, and this easily happened, because it was a specific thing put on the schedule that couldn't be overlooked

resolutions should be specific and there should be something you do every day or every week that you can point to as progress, that's why "rage against old attitudes" is not a resolution, where is the goal to be achieved? you can just pick a fight w. somebody and congratulate yourself that you've raged against their attitude, can't you?

just my humble opinion but since you asked...

23. learn new stuff--
I am taking college courses online in world literature and cosmology. I have never watched the History channel or any other bull shit on TV

I have set goals for weight loss and exercise , I just do not wish to post them for the world to see

You take "rage against old attitudes" way to literally

31. i actually left the same advice at the same time as bosshog (make specific goals)
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 03:24 PM by pitohui
but apparently you take it better from him than from me

if your OP had made it clear that you did have specific goals neither of us would have felt the need to say that people who want results must make specific goals

sorry you were offended because i was trying to be helpful  -- i tend to give specific examples, i am sorry you were unable to comprehend that a specific example is meant to be an example not an accusation SHEESH!

33. Number 4 sounds like my new attitude...
Over the past few months I've been practicing looking at things from a different angle -- i.e., fighting the tendency to make snap judgments, not assuming I know things are going to turn out, giving someone the benefit of the doubt. It's all actually made life less stressful.

And as for the original topic of this thread, yes, I started my list the other day. Among other things, I'm going to have a go at the physical clutter in my life (and maybe even the mental clutter as well).
