Pretty much all flavored low-cal waters contain sucralose or aspertame, often in higher quantities than diet soda.

29. Sucralose and acesulfame-K are both artificial sweeteners.
Splenda and Equal to use commercial brand names. Sucrose syrup is sugar water.

Propel is better for you than most low-cal beverages admittedly and that b12 is a good thing since most people don't get enough daily. The zero calorie sports beverage Powerade Zero and Gatorade are toxic by comparison, almost as bad as diet soda.

if you're speaking of caloric content. I use the powder mix. For whatever reason, 1 packet (which they suggest mixing into a 16.9 0z, bottle of water) is 2 servings. But even drinking the entire bottle, there are 20 calories.

93. Hrm, I must be thinking of one of the other ones...
There's an "enhanced water" drink out there that has like 110 calories for a 20-ounce bottle, compared to 150 for a 12-ounce can of Coke. Granted, ounce per ounce, it's somewhat less, but in reality one container is the serving size, not this 2.5 servings per container crap they put on the nutritional information.

But the propel fitness water isn't flavored THAT much.

Of course, it still has artificial sweetners and such, so if you're looking to get away from that entirely it won't be of much help.

28. unsweetened tea with lemon or water with lemon slices, or even better lemon and lime
slices.

I never liked diet soda, but I weaned myself from regular sodas w/tea.

It takes so much less sugar if you sweeten the tea yourself, you aren't getting that much in calories, either. If I am making sweetened tea, I use about 1/4 cup of sugar for a 2 quart pitcher of tea. I used to put in a cup of sugar, when I made it like my grandmother did.

Diet Cherry/Vanilla Dr Pepper.

I need to get back to mineral water.

Yup, tap water in a semi-rural area that's so high in mineral content, the aquarium water test kit I used showed mineral content approximately only 20x higher than the maximum safety tolerance. (good thing I liked African Cichlids at the time; any South American aquatic species would die in this area's water...) So if you want to drink rocks, come over to my place...

31. I grew up with a well like that, the hot water always blasted out a bit of
gravel in the tub and the filters on the intake line had to be rotated every 2 months instead of six.

But it was tasty water. Fortunately not sulphuric, just good clean high calcium Kentucky cave water, most likely. I remain convinced the well digger tapped a cave stream, as whenever it rained the water turned red. There was a pond upstream that would not hold water, so I think there was a cave under it somewhere.

We had healthy teeth. Yep. but my dad and I both had kidney stones.

That water made the BEST iced tea ever

16. A lot of unsweetened tea and tisane.
I have such a wide variety to choose from that I never get tired of it. Tisane is any steeped beverage that doesn't contain tea, such as rooibos, chamomile, yerba mate or commercial herbal "teas".

26. I can fix that...
that aftertaste is frequently caused by either the use of poor quality tea, using water that is too hot (over 190'F) or oversteeping your tea. The reason is the same in all three cases, bitter volatile components. A telltale sign is the presence of small stable whitish bubbles on the surface of your tea. Most people oversteep tea, those bubbles shouldn't be there. Some may be formed by cooling but without a change in flavor.

A decent black tea should only need to steep for 3-4 minutes, 4 is really pushing for most black teas. Oolongs typically need 5 minutes. Whites can stand a solid 6-7 minutes. Greens are a completely different matter: Sencha and bancha only require 30 seconds or so while a denser green like Ting-ting can steep indefinitely.

I'd still suggest the tisanes...most of them do not have a tea taste at all. Good choices for making an herbal iced tea would be:
Rooibos (red tea) is fruity and so sweet that I can't drink it with sweetener. Add some citrus and it's divine.
Hibiscus blends are fruity and tart with a taste similar to fresh off the vine raspberries.
Spearmint or mint-blend makes a minty strong-flavored beverage which can be refreshing in the evening.

All are about 5 calories per 16oz glass without sweetener or sugar.

33. Tea
My faves: SPORTea (has electrolytes like "fitness" waters, but no sweeteners) and Good Earth green tea with lemongrass (the lemongrass makes it kind of like drinking flowers--in a good way). Both are good hot or cold. Otherwise, I keep an assortment of teas and just mix it up, but these two are my staples and I keep a pitcher in the fridge. SPORTea is at most whole foods-type stores and the Good Earth brand is everywhere.

Diet sodas are just nasty, you know--though I see Pepsi is now poised to release their first stevia-sweetened version. (Stevia is an herb and the only noncaloric sweetener that doesn't cause a carb reaction or otherwise fuck with your body.)

41. Here's what I do.
Edited on Mon Jan-05-09 08:34 PM by fudge stripe cookays
And I'm addicted to Coke.

When I try to cut back, I start with various flavored carbonated waters like Perrier or La Croix with lime, or lemon or orange. I actually found some La Croix here over the holidays that's raspberry and cranberry. Yum!

Then, I can drink a lone glass of water with some fresh lemon juice. So I begin alternating. Then, I can finally begin weaning myself off the carbonation and the flavor and just drink water.

Seriously...when you get up to 8 glasses a day, like I do on Weight Watchers, the more you drink, the more you crave. You get dehydrated very easily when you drink that much, and the more you drink, the healthier it makes you. Then, you'll try to drink a Coke, and it will taste syrupy and gross.

Here's another reason to switch....artificial sweeteners lead to MS. I have it, and I'm convinced that's how I got it, with all the Equal I consumed in the 80s. STOP DRINKING THAT SHIT, NOW.

Drinking too much water is bad for you. You start washing nutrients out of your system, and that's not good. Some people have died from drinking too much water. That "eight ten-ounce glasses of water a day" myth has been disproven.

Ultimately, it's about oral.

52. Well,
here's one: http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp

And here's another: http://ajpregu.physiology.org/cgi/content/full/283/5/R993

Here's a nice exposition of the Dartmouth article: http://calorielab.com/news/2006/05/28/8-glasses-of-water-a-diet-urban-legend/

Science Daily has a good article about some health myths, including the eight glasses of water a day: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071220195639.htm

A article in the UK Telegraph references the U of P research: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1583752/No-benefit-in-drinking-eight-glasses-of-water-a-day,-scientists-say.html

This is an expansion of the Indiana research: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/335/7633/1288

There are a lot more, but this is a nice overview. It's been disproven for quite some time. I suspect outfits like Weight Watchers continue to propound this myth so as to keep its subscribers feeling full and gratifying that need to have something in one's mouth.

As I said, it's oral.

53. Your articles mostly refer to each other.
My experience of almost 29 years of working with muscle spasms show me that drinking more water dramatically improves the tissues, within less than a minute, about 95% of the time. It is a remarkable thing to observe.

Drinking more water in the morning seems to really help folks with constipation, but from the literature review these don't seem to be questions folks are asking. This is likely because drug companies who fund most of the studies, don't care.

The only real downside I read in your articles was a reference to water intoxication being fatal. That would be 4 Gallons at one time. I have not heard anyone suggest this as a good idea.

"Healthy adult kidneys are capable of processing 15 liters of water or almost 4 U.S. gallons, per day, if one drinks the water in small quantities spread throughout the entire day.

It is not advisable, however, to drink 15 liters of water daily over a long period."

This below seems to sum up your 'disproval' which IMHO, is no disproval.

"The literature review by Drs Negoianu and Goldfarb reveals there is no clear evidence of benefit from increasing water intake. On the other hand, no clear evidence exists of a lack of benefit. "There is simply a lack of evidence in general," they explain."

58. Actually, they don't.......
The overviews do quote with some repitition, but I just thought I'd make it easy for anyone who wanted to read them.

And it wasn't my "disproval" (is that a word?). I was just quoting the literature.

If you have muscle spasms, and you've found that drinking water helps those spasms, more power to you. That, of course, has nothing to do with the idea that eight ten-ounce glasses of water daily are required for good health. Perhaps for you, but not for everyone.

Of course water is necessary to healthy living. There's no one who would quibble with that. But, the evolution of the dicta laid down originally by that Stillman Diet - which helped with the inevitable constipation that resulted from the Stillman Diet, no doubt - has now been shown to be exaggerated.

But so is exercise vital for proper digestion. There's no one claiming that one must spend an hour a day on treadmill in order to be healthy, which would be goofy.

The quote you included at the end of the article broke me up when I read it. When someone says something that ridiculous, it's usually probative of the reality that they have nothing substantive to contribute. It's akin to saying "There's no evidence that George W. Bush was the best President we've ever had. On the other hand, there's no evidence that he wasn't."

Well, in fact, there is. Just as there is evidence that good health is not contingent on consuming a certain amount of water every day. If the drug companies - as you suggest without any amplification - are behind this notion that people shouldn't drink so much water, is it possible that the water producers are behind other research saying something inane like that quote at the end of your post?

Hey, if you're happy drinking eight glasses of water a day and it makes you feel good, that's your business. Expansion was requested, it was delivered, and I am hardly going to defend the truth of the findings. Taking feeble shots at what I provided does nothing to bolster your belief in the eight glass a day system. It just diminishes you.

Drink up. Be happy and healthy.

62. Disproval is a noun.
dis·prove (ds-prv)
tr.v. dis·proved, dis·prov·ing, dis·proves
To prove to be false, invalid, or in error; refute.

dis·prova·ble adj.
dis·proval n.

Sorry you thought the article you provided was "inane"
I was looking for the 8 glasses to be disproved and this was the literature review you provided, but must not have read. Glad it amused you, now that you have.

(Literature review is what folks do to see what has been published in the field they are discussing, which is what makes the quote relevant. Their literature review assessment was that there was not evidence one way or the other.

I am not diminished, just amused, at someone who sends links they have not read.
Have a lovely evening and stay hydrated whatever that means to you.
Best,
Melissa

That's a serious oral fixation. Maybe you should try to figure out what's behind it, and your need for all that Diet Coke (or a substitute) might diminish.

48. I live on iced tea. I know what you mean about water, I never touch the stuff.
I use a tad over a half cup of sugar to a gallon of tea. (and I do it in the sun year round - 4 family sized bags per gallon in winter, 3 in summer) Plenty of caffeine, flavor, and a little sweet - nothing compared to soda or even powdered stuff. Stay away from fake sweeteners.

If you can afford soda, try mixing real fruit juice half and half with plain carbonated water. Or even good filtered water if you are trying to ditch the bubbles (I love bubbles and I love soda but I just can't afford it, moneywise or healthwise)

We have high levels of toxins in our groundwater here so I have a water cooler and get 5 gallon bottles delivered. I've noticed that there's a difference in the taste of the water from different vendors. Maybe you could try different types of purified water and see if one of them tastes better to you.

I keep trying to give up my Diet Coke addiction because it's ruining my teeth and god knows what else. It's hard to give up. I like carbonation so sometimes I drink sparkling water and that satisfies the yen for the carbonation without all the chemical crap.

losing the need for sweetness will serve you well in your life. if it's flavor you seek, green tea with some ginger is a cool alternative.

85. Lemon water sweetened with Stevia
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 10:38 AM by astral
Get a hand lemon juicer, use 1/2 lemon per 8-oz glass of water, or just use half that amount if you want a lighter flavor. Add 7 drops of water-based dark stevia extract (Sweetleaf is my brand) and of course water from a water filter but if you're just into using your tapwater that's okay.

Sweetleaf also makes assorted flavored stevia extracts, but I don't think they're dark (I like the dark version better than the clear) with different kinds of essences in them, so you can find lots of variety that way.

A little carbonated water with stevia added is a fine pop substitute too, but I do not think carbonation is healthy, use it just as a now - and - then treat.

90. Go to a health food store and look for diet drinks sweetened with stivia
I broke a six pack a day diet coke habit nine years ago that way. Watch a documentary called "sweet misery" and you'll be scared off aspartame for good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n-gA0wvi84 I don't think that Spenda is a decent alternative either. Google "splenda toxicity" and you'll read why. Stivia is an herb that has been used as a sweetener for ages, but it can't be patented and isn't subsidized, so large corporations show little interest in it. Still many smaller companies are using it to flavor diet drinks and there are new items on the market every month, so take a trip to a local health food store to check it out!

Seltzer by itself contains no sugar. It's just water charged with carbon dioxide.

Add apple, grape, or whatever your favorite juice is to create a low-calorie, healthy drink. (If you use white grape juice, you can pretend you're having a wine spritzer.)

I have SEEN stuff like this that are just, PLAIN, LIES.

____________
Many of the notions (and dubious "facts") presented in that e-mail seem to have been taken from the book Your Body's Many Cries for Water, by Fereydoon Batmanghelidj. Dr. Batmanghelidj, an Iranian-born physician who now lives in the U.S., maintains that people "need to learn they're not sick, only thirsty,'' and that simply drinking more water "cures many diseases like arthritis, angina, migraines, hypertension and asthma." However, he arrived at his conclusions through reading, not research, and he claims that his ideas represent a "paradigm shift" that required him to self-publish his book lest his findings "be suppressed.''
____________

LIE. Dr. Batman, as his fans called him (he is deceased) USED water to cure people of diseases when water was all he had at his disposal, and learned himself how fantastic it was for many things called 'diseases.'

Don't take Snopes at face value. Sorry!

111. Put a filter on your faucet. Keep a pitcher or bottle of water-glass only-in your refrigerator.
Have plenty of limes in the house. When you want a drink, cut a lime and squeeze it into a glass with some nice cold water. If you want some sweetness, you can get Stevia, as either a powder or a liquid at any health food store. Use it sparingly as it is very sweet. It is a naturally occurring sweetener, with none of the side-effects of artificial sweeteners and none of the calories of sugar.
