What is your opinion of this particular song?
I'm curious.

What do you think about the story
the voice
the genre
etc...

If you can make it through it...
PLEASE kill the video at 4:10.. they get all religious. It's the best version of the song in question though. (I actually like the music/vocals of the song after the cut-off, but don't like.. believe it and junk  )

6. Serious?
The song is awesome. One of the best folk songs written in the past twenty years in my opinion.

This particular version? Not so great. It's a typical bluegrass adaptation and not inspirationally performed. Del McCoury is a legend for his history and reputation, but he does nothing for this song. I don't see him as a tragically injured man giving his lover a bike that, until he was injured, he loved more than any woman before her.

7. Do you know another version?
Edited on Wed Jan-14-09 02:49 AM by Inchworm
I'm all jittery thinking about it.

I knew he was singing someone else's song, but never thought the story was told before.

:hi:

EDIT: and yes.. seriously

Now that you brought me to the light I'll know to read tomorrow.

"vincent 52" brings up versions on youtube, but now I wonder the origin.

:)

12. I'm a big bluegrass fan, but I'm a bigger folksinger fan.
Richard Thompson's version -- particularly versions strictly solo acoustic -- are just pure examples of what makes folk music work at its purest form. His song, his story, his music (with no one else's immediate contribution) deliver the story and the art as directly as possible.

I love a wide variety of music, but when it's as pure and direct as possible -- inspiration --> songwriting --> performance -- I don't think you can often top it.

13. If he was the writer
I'd rather think it was inspired by real.

Love it thanks!

14. I agree.
That's what makes good music work -- when you know (or maybe just believe) that the story is true.

17. Hells yea!
The two are so close.

I'd think Mr McCoury would feel safer talking about ripping off a head and tossing in a mine shaft.. but...

I love the vibe you slipped me unknowingly.

19. I know this song so well..
When it started I attacked 2 sleeping dogs.

They are used to it and it is pretty much just a fun wrastlin match.

It ain't easy sleepin' here while Mr Owens sangs.

:woohoo:

I'm either getting maudlin, pissed off, or practicing; neither is a safe situation for a kitty...
