Mom's suit says she wasn't allowed privacy for breast pump at work

Olive Garden says privacy is available
By Nicole Young • THE TENNESSEAN • February 26, 2009

A Rutherford County woman has filed suit in Davidson County Chancery Court saying she was required to pump breast milk for her newborn baby in front of co-workers at the Antioch restaurant where she worked.

Elizabeth Gray and her husband, Daniel Christopher, are suing GMRI Inc., parent company of Olive Garden restaurants, for more than $140,000 in damages. They say the Antioch Olive Garden, where Gray was a server, violated state law.

Federal labor laws don't mandate breast-feeding rooms, but Tennessee law requires employers to "make reasonable efforts to provide a (place), other than a toilet stall, where the employee can express breast milk in privacy."

According to the suit, a female manager told Gray that she would not be able to pump in private, leaving her with the choice to pump in an office with a manager present or in a bathroom stall. The same manager expressed her disapproval of breast-feeding, calling the process "disgusting."

1. ... what exactly is the reasoning for having a manager present while she's doing that?
I'm a little fuzzy on that one...

7. I think I would have said, "Fuck you" to the manager and walked out the door right then and there.

8. Maybe they want her to contribute to a new recipe?
Surely breastmilk doesn't act the same in recipes as cow's milk.

Surely.

2. Breastfeeding is disgusting?
From a woman, no less. Presumably not a mother.
