Any recommendation for non-sweet spaghetti sauce?
I've bought Newman's in the past, but it's a little too sweet for my taste. I like it when there's just a hint of sweetness to counter the acidity of the tomato, but more sour than sweet. I'm negotiable on the other aspects of the flavor or ingredients.

It seems like most of the cheaper, store bought spaghetti sauces are too sweet and/or loaded with High Fructose Corn Syrup.

I make my own every now and then, but I'm feeling lazy lately.

Any recommendations?

3. They are an awesome store
Cheaper than a grocery store and either all-natural or organic.

4. My only rec would be to make your own. My husband
will not eat store bought spaghetti sauce. It must have to do with having an Italian Nona that made authentic pasta.

7. Might have to
It's not too much trouble I guess. I usually make a huge portion and freeze it in individual containers.

Laziness prevails sometimes, however. :)

You make your own sauce for you and your husband?

8. I do. I will save some too and use it for lasagna.
I do not make my own noodles like his Nona does. All this sketti talk makes me want some! :9

9. I'm half Italian and I won't eat jarred sauce.

I also learned to make a huge pot of sauce when I was still cooking for my big family at home. Since it's just me and the other half here, I developed a quick and easy sauce that fits the bill when we want some but don't have the time and desire for a huge pot. I make it with mushrooms but you can brown crumbled bulk Italian sausage in the skillet in place of the 'shrooms in this recipe.

2 T. olive oil
1 t. mince garlic
4 oz of sliced fresh mushrooms
1 small can crushed or petite diced tomatoes
1 small can of tomato paste
1 small can of tomato sauce
Salt, pepper, basil, red pepper flake to taste
1/4 c. grated parmesan cheese

Heat the oil in a large skillet and add the garlic and mushrooms. Saute for a few minutes and add the canned ingredients and the seasonings. Cover and simmer, stir frequently. When hot stir in the parm cheese. Simmer a little bit longer and serve.

It tastes almost as good as my all day sauce, enough to do in a pinch.

11. I always make mine on Sunday afternoons, just put everything together and let it simmer for 2-3 hour
Then I freeze the extras. It's a little bit of work, but it's well worth the effort. I've been off the Ragu for quite some time now. LoL

5. Safeway (or Vons or Pavillions, I believe) Arrabiata sauce
I add garlic powder, salt & pepper, and several good shakes of red pepper flakes. Good stuff.

6. Get the stuff with no sugar and add a tablesoon of miso
preferrably barley miso, but chickpea is sort of sweet so that's also an option.

12. I don't like sweet spaghetti sauce either, but I also don't
have a lot of money to work with, and as a full-time student and Mom, not a lot of time either.

We get the Hunt's "Zesty and Spicy" in a can. It's about $1.09 per can and is not nearly as sweet as the crap in the jars.

13. I recommend reading the ingredients. The unsweetened ones (rare) are great.
I like to control the sweetener. I like date sugar for tomato sauces.

14. I like Classico
esp. with sausage and peppers. Do they sell this brand locally? They have a marinara sauce which is a sweet one but the rest of them are not. Plus they come in useful reusable jars.

16. I have always bought Ragu....and that's what I stick with
Prego, Newmans, and Five Brothers are okay, but like you said, too sweet. I find Ragu is not like that...if that helps any.
