People that let their dogs run loose to wreak havoc S.U.C.K.

Thanks for the emergency vet visit, assholes!! Thanks to people like you I had to blow a Saturday, go hundreds of dollars in the hole, and my dog has to suffer with an ear that's split in two from the tip to a couple of inches up, 3 puncture wounds deeper inside the ear, and a chunk of skin missing from the edge. Not only that, we have to worry about the tissue potentially dying resulting in the loss of a large percentage of his ear since cartilage has no real blood flow and won't necessarily heal properly.

The terrible offense he committed to bring on these injuries? Being outside in HIS OWN YARD for approximately 5 whole minutes.

:grr:

1. Sorry that your dog was injured
Is the owner going to pay for the costs? He/She should. Do you know if the dog is utd with vaccines?

4. I have no idea who the dogs belong to.
Nor where they came from, or where they went. It was apparently an in and out endeavor - performed on their way to who knows where. When I saw them they were on the outside of the fence - in the middle of the road actually, with cars honking and having to go around them. I didn't even know my dog was injured until a few minutes after he'd been back in the house and I started noticing blood... The offenders were long gone by then.

But yeah ... I shouldn't have to be the one paying for it in a just situation.

3. I'm so sorry that happened to you and your pooch.
My dog was attacked by another dog who ran through an electric fence to get at him. It was the seventh dog he attacked and yet the owners kept paying the vet bills for their attack dog's unprovoked "incidents." My dog had puncture wounds near his throat and along his torso, and of course it required a visit to the all night emergency vet clinic. The owners paid the $400 bucks, but I was so angry that they allowed it to continue over and over again.
I hope you know who this dog belongs to and can get them to pay.
Can you report the dog to the county animal control?
I hope your baby heals OK and the trauma for both of you fades with time.

7. I'm so sorry Madrone! Just last night our kitty was killed by a dog..
She was out in her own yard, not five feet from our door. I'm glad your dog is still here! People need to keep control of their animals so our babies don't keep getting caught in these messes.

13. That's terrible :(
My dogs killed a friend's cat late last summer. I don't really know what happened as I wasn't there when it occurred. I can't even begin to describe how I felt ... it was horrible on a number of different levels. I know it would have never happened if I were around because I keep close tabs on my animals but someone else was dogsitting them and the cat. No one saw it happen. The best we can figure is that the little annoying dog I kind of "ended up with" started something with the cat and my lab mix jumped in to his defense. Either that or they thought they were playing. They both live happily and respectfully w/ three cats, so it was very unexpected and horrifying.

As someone that's been the responsible party on the other side of what you're going through ... I'm very, very sorry.

8. I almost had an accident because of a loose dog the other night.
The dog decided to chase a bunch of deer. Scared them all out into the road right in front of my car. Then when I'd managed to miss them, the dog came barreling out in front of me and I had to swerve again. This town has leash laws on the books, but apparently they haven't enforced them for a few years.

I suspect its the dog from next door actually, they suddenly started letting two large dogs out and the yard isn't fenced in completely. And if that's the case, the dog chased them halfway across the neighborhood. Because I wasn't that close to my house when it happened.

10. I'm glad you made it out of that unharmed!
I can't imagine how scary it would be.

12. It wouldn't be the first time I saw a bunch of deer in my headlights at night...
... but it was the first time that they felt the need to run in front of my car, rather than away from it.

14. Thanks for the wake-up... I am an offender
I have 3 large dogs (used to be 4 but our eldest passed away in Jan).

We used to live out in the boonies when we had the eldest 2 - 300 acres for them to run around on, so they learned to come when called safely.

Well now that we live in town... (have been for over 9 yrs now), we let them run around outside every now and then when we go out (like to do poop patrol) or just to play. We rent and do not have a fenced in yard. The youngest we always tie up because they have no idea what the frickin word come means.

Oh and when I say tied up.. I mean to potty or play... they are all indoor dogs.

I let my oldest lab mix loose a lot (he is 11 and well doesn't move to fast) but over the years of course, he has chased runners (not to attack but you know to run with them...but I am sure the sight of 80 pound black dog running at you is scary), he has wandered over to visit the neighbors etc. I have no recall with him anymore. Our other black lab, well she is almost always tied up.. every now and then she gets loose (broken lead or sneaks behind me). She is a holy terror for me... she runs all over with no regard for traffic, she comes back after her sprint around the neighborhood and I die a slow death worrying about her. During the winter and late at night I let her loose to romp in the snow with the other dogs... 75% of the time she doesn't run off...

Our youngest dog is my mom's dog who is an escape artist which is why we have him she cannot walk him without him getting loose.
He is a german shepherd... once last summer the young lab got loose and ran to greet some teens walking home from school, which meant the other lab had to go with, then the german shep yanked the chain out of the ground to be with the other 2. Good god, thankfully the teens remained calm, I was trying to grab one at a time and push them towards the house.

I am an irresponsible owner... I know better, I know its dangerous for my dogs and other dogs (when they get into that pack mentality), and I try to rationalize and excuse letting them loose. I want them to be able to run and play without getting tangled up in tie outs. But I either need to train them, exercise them more or get some type of fencing that our landlord will allow. I have a million excuses as to why I don't

But there is no excuse... if something happened to them or someone else it would be 100% my fault...and that is not ok.

I needed this post to slap me into being a responsible owner 100% of the time.. not just most of the time...

I am so sorry about your dog and please know your post has been a wake-up call
