Have I met your avatar??

Sometimes I see avatars (or those little icons we pick for ourselves) that I don't recognize. Some of these are famous people, that I feel I should know.

Here's your chance to respond to a thread just so we can see your avatar. If I don't know who it is, now's my chance to ask in a forum where I won't look completely ignorant!

What do you say?

15. One of my favorite Buddhist writers.
He is a Vietnamese Zen Master. He writes simply and beautifully about the experience of life. Here is a poem from him.

Call Me by My True Names

Do not say that I'll depart tomorrow
because even today I still arrive.

Look deeply: I arrive in every second
to be a bud on a spring branch,
to be a tiny bird, with wings still fragile,
learning to sing in my new nest,
to be a caterpillar in the heart of a flower,
to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone.

I still arrive, in order to laugh and to cry,
in order to fear and to hope.
The rhythm of my heart is the birth and
death of all that are alive.

I am the mayfly metamorphosing on the surface of the river,
and I am the bird which, when spring comes, arrives in time
to eat the mayfly.

I am the frog swimming happily in the clear pond,
and I am also the grass-snake who, approaching in silence,
feeds itself on the frog.

I am the child in Uganda, all skin and bones,
my legs as thin as bamboo sticks,
and I am the arms merchant, selling deadly weapons to
Uganda.

I am the twelve-year-old girl, refugee on a small boat,
who throws herself into the ocean after being raped by a sea
pirate,
and I am the pirate, my heart not yet capable of seeing and
loving.

I am a member of the politburo, with plenty of power in my
hands,
and I am the man who has to pay his "debt of blood" to, my
people,
dying slowly in a forced labor camp.

My joy is like spring, so warm it makes flowers bloom in all
walks of life.
My pain if like a river of tears, so full it fills the four oceans.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can hear all my cries and laughs at once,
so I can see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names,
so I can wake up,
and so the door of my heart can be left open,
the door of compassion.

Thich Nhat Hanh

22. Mr. Natural

Mr. Natural (Fred Natural) is a comic book character created and drawn by the 1960s counter culture and underground comix artist Robert Crumb. The character first appeared in the first issue of Yarrowstalks (May 5, 1967 issue).

At first appearance, he is a mystic guru who spouts aphorisms on the evils of the modern world and the salvation to be found in mysticism and natural living. He has renounced the material world and lives off anything he can get in exchange for his nuggets of wisdom.

Usually depicted as slightly overweight (although his size varies), he is bald, has a long white beard, and wears a gown which makes him resemble the Old Testament God or a prophet.

Marx was a hack whose greatest work was to grab strains of socialist thought that was floating around for the previous decades and claim it as his own. Not to mention he was a statist and opposed syndicalistic anarchistic socialism.

50. Calzontzin
Supermacho, Barefoot free balling indian sage, wrapped in an electric blanket.

It's especially funny in Spanish where Calzontzin, sounded out loud is "calzon sin" meaning "without underwear".

But also, Calzontzin, was a Purépecha prince in the time of the Aztecs.

The author of this character is Eduardo del Río (Rius), who wrote Marx for Beginners:

...I try. Sometimes people misread me because I have a dry sense of humor and use sarcasm.

Nice to be remembered. Yeah, i got on here before protesting at the RNC convention in New york.

Long time ago now.

But he also wrote some of the most amazingly visionary, influential fiction of the past century. :-)

81. my avatar is my alter ego
it is taken from a painting that i did many years ago. most of my paintings are warm and fuzzy, but this mean little fellow just popped out one day, and he stood out right away. it is one of my favorite ever.
he is my logo. he is the mascot of the whole button thing i do, but he is also on things like my business card, and i have him tattooed on my arm. (my only tattoo)

89. If you've played Runescape, you might have
met my avatar. It's my main character from the game. He's got long black hair now as a tribute to Joey Ramone. First, I had it sort of medium length and black, then I went blond, then I grew it out and left it blond. When I decided to go for 99 Agility, I decided to dye it black and leave it long as a tribute for Joey Ramone. I have no real reason why. I just wanted to do that.

So, my avatar is my main character from Runescape.

94. Mine is the famous, wonderful, loving, dear friend to many,
Andy Stephenson. Did you ever get to meet him? He was a gem among priceless gems! My son and I miss him and think of him often. One of the last things he said to me was that he wanted to be remembered--I promised him, and, here he is and here he will stay!
