Was shopping at the local Kroger grocery today.
There were only two check-out aisles open and shoppers lined up. I waiting in line for 15 minutes. It seems that they would hire more check-out people. There are so many looking for jobs. I'm sure that Kroger could afford to put more people to work. This store is in a fairly upscale area and people shopping there spend a lot of money, so why are there so few employees at that store?

2. Because Kroger would have to pay them.

I'm sure companies do studies about just how long a customer has to wait before they get so angry they leave and won't ever come back.

A store will then study it's traffic patterns and only keep enough workers on the clock to average just under that wait time.

This is the reason that you have to wait to get checked out at most stores regardless of what time of day it is and how busy they are.

3. Everyone's hurting
The local Safeway is doing layoffs, not because they are short of cash, and not because they have to many employees, but because of "Corporate Policy."

Basically Safeway said "eliminate x many employees" even if they could cover it (they can) and even if they need them (they do)

4. Supermarkets are cuttting workers' hours
A good friend of mine was cut 9 hours a week and was crying the other day. Now she can't pay the mortgage.

5. Trader Joes was so packed today you would think a Hurricane was bearing
down on Long Island Sound. They had a lot of registers open they just seemed to be packed... plus they had run out of the good guacamole and Italian orange soda...

6. I was at a local Publix a couple weeks ago and was speaking with a manager
He was helping me find something. He said he had 3 people call in, and only one was sick, at the last minute, yet he gets about 10 calls a day from people wanting jobs. I guess the other two just had other things to do.
