Today, I am officially the mother of a teenager.
At 8:22am EST, my son, Justin, turned 13 years old. I still can't believe it's been 13 years since I became a mother.

He informed me a few minutes ago, that in 4 years, he can take my Firebird off my hands. Good Lord.

7. 3? Make that 2 in NC.
You can start learning to drive at 15 here in NC. Then unsupervised at 16.

In theory.

Mark.

11. Yeah.
I know that they have special licenses for farmers - IIRC, farmer boys can get their license at 14 or 15, here in Jersey. I believe that Virginia is the same.

6. When I hear things like that....
I'm overjoyed to have two sons. Having daughters would likely put me in the cardiac wing. ;)

9. Hopefully, he won't be like me as a teenager
I was the golden child and at some point I became violent, discovered alcohol and couldn't stop being arrested.

10. Hey, you!
Howz you and your beautiful wife? :hi:

Well, the kid is so anti-war, anti-violence, and anti-substance abuse, that I can't picture an extreme shift like that - although I imagine that anything is possible. :scared:

I do my best to keep him busy with other things - hopefully it will take him through the rough years. :)

32. We're doing okay
I was a straigh-A student, National Honors member, and community volunteer. For some reason I thought I needed to be a violent criminal to be accepted. I even started a gang.

Amazingly (not really), it made me more of an outcast.

If I think long and hard about it, I remember all the things that have happened since he was born - numerous deaths in the family, Columbine, Bush, 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq - but....wow. It goes sooooo fast.

20. Ooooohhhh. Baby smell.
I haven't been so unlucky as to have that completely taken away from me just yet. I have a few friends who are still having babies - so I do get to have those nostalgic moments from time to time; the difference is, I can hand them back. :P :hi:

i used to think that being a grandma would be great, but now i cross my fingers that my girls will keep their pledge to not reproduce. those little faces, those smells, they are like a tar pit, they are.
a little squeeze here and there, now, that is different. don't get much of that, tho.

29. I didn't have much choice. At age 30 (10th Anniversary coming up next month!) I married
a 38 year-old with three kids from her previous marriage. Six months after the wedding, her 17 year-old daughter got pregnant and broke up with the father. Nine months later, my gloriously beautiful grandson was born. 10 years later, I have seven grandkids; My older step-daughter has three, my younger has two, plus two steps of her own by her husband. I still get a thrill from the :wow: I get from people when I tell them I'm a grandfather... B-)

35. Yeah, there's no biological relationship there at all. But they call me 'Grandpa", so that's
what I am. ;-)

My relationship with my first grandson is extra special, since he's the first person I ever helped to raise. My step-daughter lived with us for three years or so after she gave birth so she could find work and build a life for herself. So I fed my grandson, changed his diapers, read to him, played with him, and sang him to sleep at night. Sometimes, I was the only one who could get him to sleep. His favorite song is "Shenandoah". He's going to be nine this summer. Where did the time go?

Here are a couple of pics of the two of us:
