I start truck driving school in a week!
I'll be in Ft. Worth from March 23 to April 10. After that I'll be driving dry freight cross-country.

If I were you I would seriously save my money and do something else. Are you going to company sponsored school or are you paying for it yourself? Either way you are pretty much screwed. Swift has a two month wait to get a truck after you finish training. Which by the way is more than a few weeks at trucking school. It is actually that plus 6-8 weeks of being stuck in a truck with some smelly jackass while he makes you do all of the night driving. For that you will be paid a whole $50 a day. Doesn't seem like much but you will be grateful for it once you get your own truck. Because you will be lucky to clear $300 a week once you are on your own. That all depends on if you will be able to get a job after you finish school. Most trucking companies are not hiring right now.

Good luck. Shoot me a message and let me know how it is going. And please remember this little piece of advice. The recruiters and the people at the school are going to lie to you a lot. Go into this with your eyes and ears wide open. Research as much as you can. There are a few trucker forums out there that can answer just about any question that you have.

10. Actually...I already have a job lined up
I checked the trucker forums, and USA Truck seems to be the best one who's hiring right now. So that's who I am going to drive for. I have seen a lot of these trucks on the road, their stock is very stable--it was in the $12 range last March and it's still in the $12 range--and they run good equipment.

And while I thank you for the warning about recruiters...from my experience with the Army, "recruiter" is a synonym for "pathological liar." I trust recruiters as far as I can throw them.

I worked for them for a few years before I bought my first truck.
I still have a good friend who is a dispatcher in Van Buren. Good luck to you. You're going to need it.

4. who posts the trucking/life stories?
Hi,
There is someone on here, sorry I can't recall the nick, who went to school for that many years ago and has been posting fascinating, very well written stories about his life, and his life on the road. You should talk to him!

Can anyone let the op know who that person is?

Peace

6. Thanks!
Hi,
Thanks California Peggy, they are wonderful stories. The one where he sounded like he was at the end of his rope and just drove down to go to school was so much more than about him doing that. I'll have to tell him how much I enjoy them next time he posts one.

Peace
