Why is fog so awesome?

even when it's discernably dangerous,
it's visually compelling

In Scooby-Doo settings

Or moments of self aggrandizement

fog is awesome.

Have I been culturally programmed to think this is cool? Or is there something else that makes it make look?

1. Because it is the unholy mist of Satan farts mixed with toxic clouds from Chinese factories.
I just made that up, but it SOUNDS cool!

2. I like it because it is matter in transition.
Not quite a gas, not quite a liquid. And, it can even be so dense as to appear solid.

Fog is beautiful.

3. Beautiful pictures. On the water, fog is totally disorienting.
You sometimes feel like you are going in circles or going uphill. As long as you are not around anything (and the radar is working), it is completely magical. I also love the sound of fog horns.

Thanks for posting this.

4. Fog is beautiful. That's true. Unless you're trying to land.
And then it's the enemy.
The ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) broadcast says "Ceiling zero. Visibility 1/8th of a mile and fog."
1/8th is below your aircraft's FAA certified minimum landing visibility of 1/4 mile.
DAMN!

It sets the adrenalin pumping.
How much fuel we got?
How long can we hold?
Is there any chance it'll burn off in a few minutes?
Half an hour?
Did anybody else land?
How much fuel to the alternate, if we can't get in?
Should I declare 'Minimum Fuel' for expedited ATC routing to my alternate?
Oh, the paper work I'll have to fill out if I do that.
:eyes:

If you don't make the runway on the first try, it's going to cost your company hundreds of dollars just for the fuel burned in the go-around.
If you can't make it at all, and have to divert to an alternate, it's going to cost your company thousands.

When flying is your living, you worry about stuff like that.
But on the ground, just walking through it, it's magical.

6. I enjoy walking in fog especially if it's on the beach.
I think it is absolutely magical. I do not enjoy driving in it.
