Now, list underrated female singers
You know, those who don't get quite enough attention or credit for being great singers. Of course, I can't get to all of them. Sample list:

Maria Taylor
Amy Ray & Emily Saliers (together they would make my top ever)
Becky Stark
Alanis Morissette (acquired taste)
Emily Haines
Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Courtney Love (gets a lot of flack, but is a great rock singer like Shirley Manson, who gets more credit)
Cindy Alexander
Hope Partlow
Z Berg from The Like
Fransisca London
Eliza Gilkyson
Kate Pierson (B-52s are more known as a fun band than a singer's band, but I love her voice)
Priscilla Ahn
Molly Jenson
Vanessa Carlton
Madonna (also not enough credit given to the vocals)
Nina Gordon
Stacie Rose
Leona Naess
The Pierces
Noelle from Damone
Kelly Ogden
Mandy Moore
Aly & AJ
Nerina Pallot
Tamia
Susan Cagle
Avril Lavigne (underrated for vocals)
The women in Tilly & The Wall
Regina Spektor
Anna Nalick
Miranda Lee Richards
Leslie Mills
The Veronicas (underrated for vocals)
Brooke White
Tracyanne Campbell (Camera Obscura)
Corinne Bailey Rae
Melanie Safka
Bonnie McKee
Janis Ian

List goes on..

Please help me add some underrated R&B/soul singers. I know mostly main ones who get recognized a lot.

19. Madonna is a decent singer
Being a great singer isn't what she's known for but she can sing. I would add Britney to the list. She's clearly no Celine Dion but she's not as bad as some make her out to be.

27. She has definitely put some work into it though.
Compare the thin nasal quality of her earliest hits to "Like a Prayer" or later. She's still a long way from great, but she has improved a lot.

21. Vanessa Carlton is good
I know she released a CD in 2007 or 2008 but I didn't hear much about it. I remember I didn't like the first single. I love her songs "A Thousand Miles" and "White Houses" though.

Mandy Moore does have a pleasant voice. I don't like her music though. I didn't like the "Wild Hope" CD and I don't like the clips of her upcoming CD "Amanda Leigh."

Sometimes we agree on types of music, but have big disagreements within that music. I do hope you like the new one, though - I think it sounds like her best and I LOVED Wild Hope. A couple of the clips from the new one have the perfect pop/rock of Michelle Branch IMO.

36. About Courtney Love. She is my favorite. If you are correct that she is under-rated, then I
agree with you.

But just in general, her albums have sold well and her concerts sell out, so the reason I didn't list her is because I don't consider her under-rated.

She taught me how to play the guitar. I thought "Live Through This" was better than "Nevermind," and damned close to as good as "In Utero."

The only album I can play straight through on guitar from memory is "Live Through This" by Hole.

What an exciting period that was for music.

I'm surprised that Lucinda Williams hasn't turned up yet either, although I wouldn't exactly say she's underrated - she's more of a case of a long-running critical darling that doesn't seem to have as widespread appeal as you would think.

Lucinda has had some commercial success, but I don't think she's appreciated. Her voice is incredibly unique, and rather addicting over time.

Deborah Coleman has one of the greatest female blues voices, IMO.

Aimee's vocals are really pretty, but in her own way. I still think her best CD is Bachelor #2.

From my faves thread, here are the underrated ones:

Michelle Branch
Alison Sudol (from A Fine Frenzy)
Andrea Corr
Kay Hanley
Harriet Wheeler
Natalie Maines
Gladys Knight
Aimee Mann
Lucinda Williams
Loreena McKennitt

I'm not sure Neko Case from the faves list is underrated, since she's fairly well known and people concentrate on That Voice.

84. Michelle Shocked. This one's from her masterpiece Americana album "Arkansas Traveler."
She's still performing and recording. If she hadn't been blessed (or cursed) with exceptional integrity and courage, she'd be selling a lot of CDs. She got into a contract wrangle with Mercury over keeping the rights to her songs. She sued them under the 14th Amendment, the one abolishing slavery, and won her case. It was the kiss of death as far as ever recording for a major label again, though.

She was also extremely hardheaded about the material she recorded. She wanted to record a gospel album after "Arkansas Traveler" and Mercury put its foot down on it. Then the fireworks began.

127. My vote!
I first saw her in 1970 near Boston. I was so blown away, I couldn't believe she wasn't a star. I asked her if she had ever
made any records, and she shyly told me that she was nowhere near that stage yet. She wasn't quite accurate with her prediction.
Within a year her first album came out, and she hasn't looked back.

Sadly I can only provide the link, if you want to hear her voice you'll have to go the extra mile by clickin' on the song itself. Scroll down about half way, it's second from the top on the left...http://www.radi01.com/cookie.html

This is a VERY timely song performed by Cookie, sung by Sabrina. (rumor has it she once got into a fist fight with Courtney Love, knowing Sabrina, it's likely true)

MR. PRESIDENT
(words and music by S. Libertty, J. Landy, c/o 2000)

Mr. President, Sir,
I would like to be assured.
Will you act on my behalf?
Never take a promise back?

Chorus:
Revolution –You got to fight!
Revolution –Cuz it’s your right!
Revolution –You got to fight!
Revolution …

Your countrymen are full of doubt.
All their leaders sold them out.
Frightened, torn apart,
Prove to us you’re pure of heart.

(Chorus)

Bridge:
We need to know that you’re one of us.
Help us Sir, rebuild our trust.
We need to know that you live by the rules
The same set we are help up to.

(Chorus)

Others have done so in the past.
Have times changed as much as that?
What we’ve all grown to expect –
-For ourselves is so much less.

(Chorus)

(Guitar break)

FIGHT!

137. Ian, Chapin Carpenter, Pierson and the Indigo Girls are under-rated?
That being said, I don't think Madonna sings very well. Better than the Britney's of the world, but that isn't saying much.

Here's someone who can really sing... http://www.last.fm/music/Shemekia+Copeland/_/Who+Stole+My+Radio%3F great blues and soul voice

Jessye Norman Ave Maria http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maZHi4C6Cf0&feature=related

Betty Carter Moonlight In Vermont http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWe3FDaWUS8

Maybe I should start my own thread with folks whom I think can sing really well, eh? :D :hi:

138. Under my standards, I would say so
I'm using a measure that includes popularity, and the Indigo Girls don't have the broad fan base they should have anymore. Same with Mary Chapin.

I'll check out your links. Fine to list them here. :hi:

141.  no one stays popular forever at the level that they used to, I suppose

I guess I was thinking more of actual vocal skill....

I think Chapin has a great voice and is a stellar songwriter, regardless of the whims of public opinion. She's written great songs for other folks as well, and she's probably going to get royalty credits and money for many years...

When I think of great singers, there are so, so many folks who really have skill, and i can think of plenty of those that aren't "popular" now by a long shot. But their great skill lasts.I I've seen so many shows over the years, and listened to so much music, that as usual, I feel like I have to point out those not in the "mainstream." ;)

154. After listening to your links, I really like Shemekia Copeland
Stands out from some of the other singers in R&B.

Have you checked out Mary Chapin's The Calling? It reminded me of some of her earlier stuff.

155. Shemekia is great! Blues great Johnny Clyde Copeland's daughter and she
can really belt. She has a new album, too, where she belts a bit less.

139. Gladys Knight. If she hadn't come along while Aretha was shining too, she might have gotten the cred
she richly deserves.

I love them both.
