"Britain's Got Talent" has a new star!
Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 09:42 PM by Suich
Remember Paul Potts...the phone salesman who sang opera?

Well, check out Susan Boyle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

I bet Simon Cowell had a signed contract with her before she left the building!

3. The judges were as floored as the audience,
as soon as she started singing!

11. Exactly
One of my former teaching colleagues had a voice student who was overweight and awkward and looked mentally disabled, but she gave one of the most beautiful renditions of "Voi chi sapete" from The Marriage of Figaro that I have ever heard.

17. Voi che sapete, che cose amor, Donne videte, s'io ho nel cor....
Yeah that's one of my faves too.

My audition aria that I know cold is "Non so piu cosa son" from Marriage of Figaro.

A story about that:
I went to my Italian speaking group meeting once, and there was a young couple there who were engaged. A bunch of their Italian relatives had just hit the ground that very afternoon, at the Houston airport.

The girl who ran the group wanted someone to stand up and sing an Italian song.

Well, I volunteered and laid some Cherubino on 'em....."Non so piu".

They loved it!!! The girl who ran the group was pissed and jealous! It's not my fault she can't sing in Italian, really. &8^P

Still haven't passed the audition for the Houston Grand Opera Chorus, but still......

13. Had to daub the corners of my eyes!
I looked up other, professional versions
of the song, but NONE were as powerful as
hers!

I don't think it was just the element
of surprise, either, she BELTED that out
and it is ONE TOUGH SONG!

26. Never underestimate the British,
especially those dowdy-looking middle-aged housewifely types. Look at their queen. Of course, she is a bit more pulled together, because she is the queen. But she has that housewifely look, too.

The queen was right out there driving a Jeep, in the middle of the blitz. She can take care of herself.

That's probably why they never surrendered to the Germans: they had people like Susan and the queen.

5. Great voice. A little weak on the low end, but wonderful breath control.
Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 09:54 PM by DarkTirade
Maybe I just noticed that because that's my biggest weakness though. :P

I don't think she's quite another Paul, but she's still pretty gorram good. :) A lot more spunk too, let's hope that'll help.

6. It was kind of hard to hear her because of the audience noise.
Even if she doesn't win, I bet Cowell still signs her to a contract.

I think the judges were a bit uneasy with her "spunk," especially the little dance bit!

15. Excellent.
Fabulous. The best singer I've seen on Britain's got Talent. I see absolutely nothing she has to do to change her technique.

Paul Potts needed a bit more work on his voice, on the low end, but he basically had 98% of it DOWN.

I wish they would let people on the American version sing opera, though.

I have been a musician since I was five years old and took two years of voice training (opera and bel canto in 4 languages).

Fabulous!!! :toast: :toast: :bounce: :bounce:

23. Thanks for the heads up
I read about Susan the other day and went immediately to the YouTubes but no clips were up yet. I couldn't wait to hear her sing and she didn't disappoint. WOW.

And a hearty BONK on the heads of the judges who think that only size 2 Barbie Dolls should have decent voices. (So sayeth a non-Barbie Doll who sings.)

BTW, that clip has been pulled but there are others up.

Thanks again, Suich!

32. LIFE is what does that. There are countless people with brains and talents toiling in the fields,
Edited on Mon Apr-13-09 06:45 AM by WinkyDink
as it were.
Peasants with incredible voices, laborers who are Einsteins, orphaned kids with artistic talents, etc. I think about the cruelty and unfairness of the world in this specific regard a lot. I don't think it is a case of "hacks" keeping people undiscovered; I think it is a case of poverty and the need to survive that overtakes most lives.

30. Susan sang to escape bullies...
Susan - who has never had a boyfriend - said: "I was born with a disability and that made me a target for bullies. I was called names because of my fuzzy hair and because I struggled in class.

Susan went on the talent contest to fulfil a fervent wish of her late mother Bridget, who died in 2007.

She revealed: "Mum loved the show and used to tell me I should put my name down and that I'd win it if I did.

"But I never thought I was good enough. It was only after she died that I plucked up the courage to enter.

"It was a very dark time and I suffered depression and anxiety. But out of the darkness came light. I realised I wanted to make her proud of me and the only way to do that was to take the risk and enter the show."

She said in that article she thinks Piers is "gorgeous". Her eyeballs are definitely working...:D

I sent the link to the singing video to several friends, along with the video of Paul Potts from 2007, and they have thanked me so much!! Brings tears to the eyes every time! :D

35. I "remember" Potts; went to see him twice in NYC. I wonder, though, why people would ASSUME that
looks and voice are correlated.
The judges' shock shows our innate prejudice: Oh, HOW can one who LOOKS like her have ANY talent?
