Spoilers: Star Trek
1. Intro with death of the elder Captain Kirk is well done. Effects are good, scene is actually emotional, it's just long enough to give context without dominating the movie.

2. Nimoy is in it. This is never a bad idea.

3. Effects are well done.

4. Plot TOTALLY makes sense.

5. All the new actors did well except for Uhura. I did not like her. At all. As a result I missed Nichelle Nichols in the role quite a bit.

6. That little alien guy of Scotty's was annoying. Not like Jar Jar annoying (and he had very little screen time) but in an ideal world he would have wound up on the cutting room floor.

7. They worked this song into the movie, in a way that made sense. Epic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sbqIyeed4g

Go see the fuckin' movie, kids.

2. Thanks LeftyMom...
...I think I'll go see it, so that I - like you - can develop an opinion.

3. Agree
1. That scene brought tears

2. Never a bad idea to have Nimoy

3. Effects are VERY well done

4. Plot leaves openings for the next ones

5. Didn't like the new Uhura at all

6. Scotty's partner reminded me of Nien Nunb from Jedi (Lando's co-pilot)

7. Nice to see that the Beastie Boys make it to the 24th Century

4. I think part of it was that in TOS
Uhura sort of radiated calm and dignity.

That doesn't come through at all in the movie, though I don't know how much of that to blame on the writing (I hate the way that her whole role is to be moist for Spock- I mean really, where the hell does that come from?) and how much to blame on the actress. But it seriously rubbed me the wrong way.

Unless they changed that to. Picard and co are 24th century!

8. You're not the only one who found scene #1 emotional
I wasn't bawling, but there is a bit of choking back the stray tear or two. There were however, a few people definitely crying during that scene.

I think Zoe Saldana did a good job as Uhura, though I think underplayed a bit given how important she was to the story.

I agree with you on #6, the little dude didn't need to be there.

I heartily agree that people should see this movie, much to the chagrin of a few vocal naysayers here at DU

9. To respond to each point because modern day remakes are all the same
1. Emowanking is a must for modern day remakes. Grab the emotional gonads but be sure to avoid the gray matter.
2. Always bring back a castmember from the past. Brings in the suckers from afar.
3. That's the point of remakes. Updated effects; if characters and concepts are retained the viewers should be lucky. With trek, we're not lucky.
4. What little plot there is, it does makes sense. But I still miss what made Star Trek unique: Discussing the Human Condition. (Kirk's TV era and movies did not engage in pathetic technobabble...) NuTrek is the antithesis and I have to wonder if the throwaway explanation of "alternate timeline" will work. Maybe we'll end up with this developing into the "Mirror, Mirror" universe. :D
5. The actors were good, but the writing of the characters often makes a mockery out of them. Had Doohan, Takei, Koenig, and the rest did this, they'd be bitching at Abrams just like they protested Shatner's treatment of them.
6. Agreed.
7. Always put in pop culture songs to hit the marketed product home.

The movie wasn't an "event". It's the newest shiny toy in the store that we're supposed to buy into that requires no intelligence to use. I'm a minority when it comes to this flick, but I know I'm not alone.

11. No, you're not alone.
I love "Sabotage", but found its use to be ridiculous.

That whole scene was just infuriating on so many levels.

It was put in there to make 30-something guys go: "YEAHHHHH DUUUUUDE!!!!!"

Didn't further the plot, and it didn't make Kirk's character any more interesting or likeable.

13. We reach, man!
I'm okay with silliness. In fact, I wish this movie had more silliness.

But pointless action scenes and CONSTANT over-the-top violence is just an attempt to appeal to the lowest common denominator, imho.
