Anybody taken AMTRAK?
Edited on Tue May-19-09 08:51 PM by arcadian
Traveling from A to B can you get off at C so long as C is on the A to B route? IOW, can you just get off at any stop check out some town then say, couple hours later on a different train on the same route, resume your travel to the destination on your ticket?

1. They do have a "USA Pass" which is similar to Eurailpass.
Those are shown at:

http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak/selectpass

They also offer multi-city fares, where you can start at point A, make stops at B and C, and finally arrive at D.

2. Decades back, you could buy special tickets like that
For instance, I got on at Chicago, got off at Pocatello ID, Seattle, the Grand Canyon (really Phoenix, but Amtrak provided buses to the canyon), San Antonio and New Orleans. But it wasn't like Greyhound, where you can just get off and get on anywhere along the route so long as you have a through ticket. This was a specific ticket allowing that many stops and I had to specify in advance where I was stopping. And I don't know if such a ticket still exists. Presumably the Amtrak website can elucidate; at least you don't have to call 1-800-USA-RAIL at 4 in the morning to have a chance of talking to an operator with less than an hour's wait, as in the old days.:)

3. I did, and Joe Biden was in the same car, coincidentally enough.
He sneezed all over the place; damn his hide. :)

4. I've ridden Amtrak both ways from NC to NY and NC to DC. It's more fun and relaxing
than flying, but be prepared for delays and limited schedules. I'd rather be delayed on the train
than sitting in an airport, though.

Good luck.

5. Here in southern AZ you sure couldn't get off for a few hours and then catch another train
since it only passes through twice a week;-)

6. I love train travel
My last trip was from Taylor TX to Seattle WA via Los Angeles. If you plan your route as a multi-stop trip, you can get separate tickets to each city you want to visit, and I don't believe that there is an extra cost for this. My next trip will be the northern route via Chicago, so I'll reserve it this way: 1. Taylor to Chicago via the Texas Eagle. 2. Overnight in Chicago. 3. Chicago to Seattle via the Empire Builder. 4. Visit my son in Seattle. 5. Seattle to Los Angeles via the Coast Starlight. 6. Overnight in LA. 7. LA to San Antonio via the Sunset Limited, with automatic connection made in San Antonio to the Texas Eagle, and on back to Taylor. This is a 2 week trip, and is a ton of fun! Just purchase your tickets at least 6 months in advance for the best fares. You can cancel if you need to right up to the day before the trip with no penalty.

7. I once went from Miami
to Charlotte, but it was a pain...because I had to go through Raleigh, which is NOT on the way.

Still kind of fun though.
