I’ve noticed as I’m getting older, doing anything out of my usual routine
is more and more of a big deal.

For instance, usually I get off work, pick up something to eat or go home and cook it, have supper while the 6:00 news is on…..etc.

But say I have an errand to do—then I’ll think, well, should I do that before I go home, or go home first? If I go home first, I’ll just wait until the evening when the traffic has quieted down….But then, I’d rather stay home once I get there, so maybe I will do that errand right after I leave work….

Needless to say, going off for the day—or on a trip—requires a lot more mental stewing…

Anybody else experience this?

1. The old man across the street from me used to...
Pull his car out of the garage every morning,
drive up to the corner and buy a newspaper,
park his car in front of his house.

At night, he would come out of his house
(ALWAYS in his bathrobe and pajamas...)
and pull the car back into the garage.

All HELL would break loose if someone parked
in HIS spot in front of his house when he
was picking up the paper.

Really.

He would PACE back and forth, sometimes
CURSING, until the offending usurper of
his space moved the car.

DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!!!

Mix it UP!!!11!!

5. Friends would come to visit (I lived directly across the street)...
and I would have to tell them to move their cars
if they parked in "his" spot.

It wasn't like this was a big city, either,
quiet residential street with PLENTY of
places to park.

Once he came back from his newspaper
run and became agitated because someone
was in his space.

He drove around the block for about
a half hour and then WEDGED his car
into the space in front of his DRIVEWAY,
between the usurper and the car in front
of the house next door.

People can be very weird.

2. I'm 36, but I've noticed that as well
I have a very specific ritual that I do every night before work. I get up, have some breakfast, take my meds and vitamins, get my tote bag, put my water and a snack in there, grab my jacket and a hat, put my cell phones in my pockets, and hit the road. It's like that every night that I have to work, right in that order. If soemthing throws me off a little I'll forget something sometimes. Most commonly my cell phones, but every once in a while the meds, which makes for a very uncomfortable night. It could just be someone calling me while I'm in the midst of the routine or getting sidetracked with some mail. Then I'll have to stop and make sure I've done everything that I need to do. And even though I really think about it hard, sometimes I still get screwed up.

6. I have two teenage girls that hit me at the door EVERY NIGHT...
demanding, begging, cajoling me to
take them places (anywhere I can spend
my money on them is FINE)...

I never know what I'm going to be doing,
usually a compromise of what I want from
THEM and what they want from ME.

I look forward to having the autonomy
of "routines" someday!

7. Hahaha
I tell ytou what, it looks like we each desire each other's lives. I'm trying to find a girlfriend. A lot of women my age have children, so I guess if I ever manage to get hooked up it will be like having an instant family.

4. Oh yes.
I have a very definite routine for my work days and my off days. If something interferes, it just throws me into a snit.

For example, today I really need to go to the store and I can't for the life of me decide whether to drive the 10 miles to KW or go the other way to Summerland Key, which would allow me to take the dogs for another hike.

First I have to go ride my bike though.:P

8. Yes, I find it happening
I used to pick up and go anywhere on the spur of the moment. Now I carefully consider all the possible repercussions before I do anything out of my normal routine.

9. I'm beginning to hate doing anything new. I used to love a new challenge. Now I want a routine.

11. I think about how when i was in my early 20s we'd go out for the night starting at 10
We'd be living in up in San Francisco, running all over town, dancing, drinking ...

Now ... I just want my beddy bye. :)
