I did not rescue a dog today...
Edited on Mon Jun-15-09 10:54 AM by TCJ70
...it was a black and white cocker spaniel female mix of some kind. (don't ask me, I'm not a dog person)

Now I've already said I'm not a dog person, but this is a dog I was on the brink of wanting to keep. It was dropped off at our church today and I was the one to take it in. Got it some water, let it run around a bit, put it in our fenced in side yard...

Then I called the animal shelter and they said I had to drop her off there...ugh...a dog in my car. Great.

Well, turns out this is probably the best behaved dog I've ever met. Sat down right in the passenger's foot space and didn't move the entire ride. Then I got to the shelter and she just walked right in and sat down and stared at me. It was kind of sad...but I'm not a dog person.................

EDIT: I've been informed that I haven't done anything good in this situation and should chastise myself for doing this only thing that seemed sensible at the time

1. Hopefully, she finds a better person than you at the shelter

:puke:

You didn't rescue a dog, you just gave her a death sentence.

2. Maybe I wasn't overreacting...
was I?

I read the OP and shouldn't have. I just lost my dog, and it was very hard to read about a dog that wasn't even wanted. :(

The fact that my Frankie isn't under the table at my feet right now is killing me.

9. Yesterday...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=8848393&mesg_id=8848393

And then I sat down and realized I was wrong about my own dog's age (a sign of my old age, I guess)...he was going on three, not two. I couldn't remember exactly how long he lived here, because it seemed like he always lived here. I have never had a companion like that dog, and there will never be another like him. I should shut up now, because I'm crying again.

23. I guess not...
...at least I learned something. Differences in shelters and the fact that they aren't always the best place to take lost animals is something I was unaware of.

17. Keep the dog for awhile, try to find somebody who cares more about dogs than you to take it in
Not hard to figure out.

20. You are not a horrible person...
I'm glad that you took the dog in temporarily.

If you are not a dog person, then perhaps keeping the dog would not be the best thing.

However, I am hoping that the shelter is a no kill shelter.

If the shelter does euthanize, and the dog does not get adopted, you might consider adopting the dog permanently because you seem to be quite taken with the pup, and maybe you are *indeed* a dog person and would like a good animal friend.

21. Well for one thing if you're just dropping it off at a shelter, don't call it a "rescue".
Was it even a no-kill shelter?

10. Well...so much for thinking I did a good thing.
At least if I see lost dog signs around I'll know where to direct the people looking for her.

She obviously belonged to someone. Had a collar but no tags.

because they thought she had a chance there.

16. Your post is odd...
like syaing "I got a job today!" but then saying you don't need a job and didn't take it.

Maybe you meant to just tell us about what a good dog he was or how he'd make a good pet for someone. But YOU did not rescue a dog. You were apparently asked to dispose of it which is very different from rescuing a dog.

You want props for dropping off a good dog? That's why it's odd.

That is a sad story. I hope someone adopts her.

22. For the concerned. Re:the shelter where I took the dog
Edited on Mon Jun-15-09 11:25 AM by TCJ70
So, after reading people's concerns about my actions today with the dog. I went back to the animal shelters website to see if they were a "no-kill" shelter. Turns out they are! Hopefully the owner of this dog makes the appropriate calls (this is the largest animal shelter in the area) and finds their dog. Judging by the way this dog interacted with us, I'm confident that the owners will make the effort of finding her.

EDIT (because apparently I can't make a post today without editing it...heh) : I wasn't aware of the differences in shelters. At least I learned about this stuff if I ever come across another dog that needs a helping hand.

It's not your fault you've evidently not had the pleasure of knowing a dog. There are many cat lovers on DU who don't understand why people love dogs so much, and some of us like both. ;)
The other day my son's friend called and he a had a fox terrier that had appeared in his front yard. He took her to several adult neighbors asking if they had seen her before, or knew who she belonged to. His mom was on her way out, so I picked up the dog and took her to the veterinarian, where they scanned her for a microchip, but she didn't have one. I have a dog who gets in little fights with other dogs, she's a bossy Border Collie, and I didn't dare to bring the dog to my house. The vet's assistant told me the no-kill shelter would pick her up from there, keep her for 5 days hoping the owner would look for her, then if no one claimed her they'd put her up for adoption. I made posters and put them up at the two grocery stores, and around the area where she was found.
I regret that I can't keep found dogs here. Once I kept a Redbone coon hound in my car for two days until I was able to track down her owner- it turned out the dog was an escape artist. I tracked her owner down from a "Found: Redbone coon hound " ad that had been in the paper three weeks before!

Stop listening to these assholes.

Blame the person who dumped the dog off on the church instead of taking care of themselves. THEY are the real lowlife scum, not you.
