Cat question! He threw up his meds. Do I give him more...?
Took my cat to the vet yesterday. He has a kidney infection and I'm giving him liquid penicillin twice daily.

Tonight was only his second dose, and about 15 min. after I dosed him he ate a bunch of food. 10 minutes later, he barfed it all up.

Should I give him another dose? I have no idea what to do and Google is not my friend apparently...

1. Well, not that way...think about maybe granulating his meds down into essentially dust...
sprinkle them on his eats or treats and hope for the best. I myself would not force him to ingest what he is uncomfortable with :)

Go ahead and give him another dose.
It won't hurt him. I ALWAYS double up on my first antibiotic dose for myself and all of my animals as a "kick start" - so even if he has a little remaining in this stomach it won't hurt to give it to him again.

3. I should add, since this is the "internets"....
All doctors/nurses/vets etc. I deal with or have ever spoken to know I do this, and approve. I'm not exactly flying blind and hoping for the best. :)

5. I just did--though I could only get about 3/4 of it down him!
He kind of spit some out.

Oh well, I hope it does some good...

6. Is it the pink stuff?
My poor dearly departed first EVER cat, Othello, HATED the pink stuff. He had CRF and as his renal failure progressed in last years he ended up having more and more severe mouth infections requiring antibiotics. He was nothing but skin and bones and I hated the fight that had to ensue each time I needed to force feed him the pink stuff. Then I started doing injections! OMG - that was so much easier and so less stressful on me and the cat. Just an FYI / for future reference - if your cat hates it as much as mine did you may want to ask about doing injections instead. Sounds freaky - but it's SO easy. Takes literally seconds.

I hope your kitty feels better soon. Give him hugs for me

My Othello - RIP 6/2/2008

7. Yes, it's the pink stuff. I think I can manage, though. Othello
was certainly a beauty!!!

2. generally penicilin is pretty safe to "overdose," BUT
are you sure that isn't what made him puke? can you get a hold of the vet? so you are talking a total of 20 minutes "in" - I think some probably got absorbed.
I'd probably split the difference somewhere and dose him about half way between whenever the next time was due and reset the schedule from there.

4. I wouldn't, but I'd call the vet as soon as possible
and ask his/her opinion. Maybe the cat needs to have food settled in his stomach before, or maybe you should wait an hour before you feed him. Or maybe it's a reaction to the meds.

It's interesting that he's on penicillin. I had chronic kidney and bladder infections until I had an extra kidney removed when I was 18. The doctors always prescribed amoxicillin.

8. Kitty pink stuff is amoxicillin, just like kid pink stuff. They should flavor it with
fish or something though. I don't think kitties like bubble gum LOL

we just went through a round of medicating one of ours. I hate dosing my cats.

They hate it too
