Is there a reasonably priced DVR with no subscription?

I just returned my DVR to the cable company because they charge too damn much for it because it is tied in with a channel package I don't need. I am looking at other options. TiVo charges too much for subscription.

I saw some refurb ones on Amazon (like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0013WM0BQ ), but thought I'd ask for input here first, since I know we have a lot of gadget gurus at DU.

So techies... for just basic recording and play-back on the TV (not on my monitor), what should I look for? Or am I up the wrong tree and should be looking at something else?

1. Xbox + Media center PC can do what you want

It's sort of reasonably priced if you'd use the Xbox and need a new PC anyway

3. I love Dish Network's

It wasn't that expensive, but I don't know what your budget is. I believe they charge $5/month for the service. I know I won't want to live without it if I ever had to.
