14. I would say the one to really watch out for there would be TS Claudette
considering the history of that same-named storm:

Tropical Storm Claudette (1979)

Fluctuating between tropical depression and tropical storm status, the disorganized storm drifted slowly westward before making landfall along the Texas-Louisiana border on July 24. The storm stalled over Alvin, Texas on the evening of the 25th. The storm then weakened and continued northeastward through the Ohio Valley before dissipating on July 29.

Claudette produced torrential rains in both Texas and Louisiana when it made landfall. The highest one-day total was reported near Alvin, Texas where 42 inches (1,100 mm) of rain fell. This remains the twenty-four hour rainfall record for any location in the United States.

Yep, I remember the flooding. If Allison had been that wet in 2001, there likely would have been far more loss of life due to all that torrential rain.

Good luck y'all! Maybe it will keep curving around and miss the upper coast :)

Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 10:55 PM by Lex
so we'll see. It's not going to move in a straight line on its current course because other weather systems will impact its movement in the coming days, which is what the computer model is factoring in.

34. That was my first guess
without actually looking at the computer models. You can pretty well bet that most storms that veer off from the normal westerly track and go north will more than likely do that fishhook curve and head for Europe.

Look out England! :o

38. Don't panic.
Just go down in your basememt if you have one.

Food, water, and batteries.

The worst part of a hurricane is waiting for it, not knowing what will happen.

The day Ike hit here last year a lot of people waited to get ready, not good.

Good luck, stay safe.

40. I found one preparedness technique that works great:
Whether you buy or re-use them, freeze your plastic bottles of water, then move what you can to the fridge and any coolers (only fill the coolers if it looks like the hurricane is definitely coming at you.) The ice mass will keep the freezer and fridge cool like a really big cooler while you drink the melting ones in the beer-coolers :)

I would also add that if you are close to the coast, best thing to do is to leave. Hiding in the basement just makes the storm surge that much easier to drown you. Your local news media "may" have access to floodplain data so they can graphically depict and predict flooding along the coastal communities. That and the windspeed predictions were what made me decide to stay during Ike. I think the windspeed predictions were woefully under-valued after the fact, but how can you really predict that accurately?

43. Also, turn you freezer all the way down a least one day before the hurricane hits.
Try not to go into the freezer, so it stays cold.

I remember taking the dogs for a last walk very late in the afternoon, almost dark.

The wind was starting to kick up so it a little cooler.

The dogs knew something was coming.

No birds in sight.

It was quiet except for the sound of the a few people covering windows.

I was glad when Ike finally got here.

It was a long 3 weeks of waiting.

I have no wish for another hurricane here for a least 5 years or more.

I can still hear the wind blowing.

Our neighbor lost their carport, it took a few hours to tear apart.

Two weeks without power, at least it was in September.

Y'all stay safe.

51. Even pictures aren't enough.
We drove down there to see what was left.

That is what the area around where our beach house looked like was, nothing.

There were no houses, nothing but cement slabs.

That is what I was thinking the night Ike came.

I knew our beach house was gone, just felt it.

The two people we knew who stayed have never been found.

I get sad when I go to Galveston.

I'm still kind of afraid to not see what I expect to see. I know it's been mostly cleaned up, but so much probably won't be rebuilt. Has anyone said if the Balinese Ballroom will be rebuilt or is it gone forever?

I'm sorry to hear you lost some friends in it.
I don't know if they continue to search the debris fields in Galveston Bay or not. The Houson Press did a cover story on the one crew doing that job. It was sad and maddening that we can't fund more crews to search.

59. The question YOU should ask is
are there any such fronts in your area? Do you get any front of sufficient strength to steer a full-blown hurricane? Alternately, a front is also a low-pressure zone. You likely don't want them as they will steer it towards you ;)

If you read things like real-climate.org or other climatology sites, it's takes more than a front or two to steer a hurricane. There would have to be multiple systems involved to get it to move away from the coast.

Now if you look at the computer models, those are "predicting" that it will do just that. However, they can be wrong. So, if Bill slams into the upper NE coast, are your homes and buildings constructed to take that kind of stress and flooding? Do you have building codes dictating break-away walls on the first floor?

SF will get torn apart if a big enough storm happens. Add the Tsunami factor and it gets scary.

But those of us far enough East have a certain safety - especially if we're behind the Fremont-Older fault line.

63. The West Coast doesn't get hit by hurricanes or cyclones
due to the Coriolis Effect. It would be like Morocco getting hit by a hurricane. You're too close to the beginnings of the storm to get hit by one.

Now, there are the odd storms that will form off the west coast of Mexico, but those usually just go up Baja and into the mainland, bypassing the west coast again.

You have nothing to worry about :)
