WARNING: ovens that turn on by themselves
Three times over the past year, my GE Profile Performance microwave/convection oven has suddenly turned on all by itself. The first two times, I assumed someone had accidentally leaned against the keypad and turned it on. But this third time, we were just standing around in the kitchen when suddenly the microwave turned on. That's when I Googled the model, and found out that other owners have had the same problem with their GE ovens.

This is seriously dangerous. We are about to leave for three weeks. What if our oven had turned on by itself? I wonder how many homes have burned down because of this flaw?

Please check your oven model and make sure that yours isn't one of these renegade ovens.

We've had to flip the circuit breaker to keep the thing safely off while we're gone. But as soon as we come home, that oven is getting tossed.

1. My cheap $20 microwave never did that.
Hooray for cheap!

2. My wife and I were discussing this...
phenomenon the other day after seeing something about it on Television.

Seems like it is a major design flaw. I think one person who they talked to about it thought it may have something to do with his cell phone, as he seems to recall receiving calls (or texts?) just as the microwave oven turned itself on.

5. Yes, I read an article about cell phones doing it
But mine goes on without any cell phone around. I don't know what causes it to switch on!

3. Why flip the circuit breaker? Just unplug it.
It sure as hell can't turn itself on if there is no power going into it.

4. I can't unplug it. It's mounted inside a cabinet and I can't get it out.
I'll need a repairman's help to slide it out.
