2. Pick up and say "Shto zshe yob, preyom?"
(That's "What the fuck, over?")

When whoever it is says "Excuse me?", reply "Ya ne goveroo po-angleeskie" ("I don't speak English").

Then hang up, grab a beer and wait a few minutes.

When they call back, pretend you didn't get the first call and they must have dialed a different number the first time.

5. I use that on telemarketers all the time.
It worked until I got one that knew some Russian. I called me out on it and we had a good laugh.

7. Another tactic - you have to sound REALLY angry for this one.
"Whoever you are, you just interrupted the hottest sex I've had in months. You totally fucked up the moment. If it's that damn important, call back in four hours. I going back at it and might just be finished by then." - hang up.

9. My job knows to expect my voicemail.
Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 10:57 AM by jmm
I've been known to make and receive calls in my sleep so as soon as I'm tired I turn my phone off. Once when I was woken by a call asking if I could come in I told them I didn't know who I was.

Edited for spelling

11. Back in the day, I gave Work the phone number of a second phone line.
The one that was attached to a fax machine and computer modem (before broadband, obviously). They'd be greeted by the squeal of a fax machine's handshaking protocol in their ear. I would apologize profusely if asked about it, and leave it exactly as it was.

Seriously, you probably get called because you have previously agreed to do extra work in the past. You have, therefore, become the path of least resistance. So when some supervisory type is confronted with a hole in the manning profile, you are at or near the top of their mental list of people who will solve their problem for them.

So, if you don't want the extra work, and you don't want to actually tell them "no" for political reasons, don't answer your phone. Why else do you have Caller ID?

Imagine your husband coming home some evening and finding a fax saying: "There's been an accident; come to St Luke's ER asap" on your home fax.

Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 12:52 PM by Iggo
...don't work weekends, either.

But even if they called and it was work related, our payroll chick, who is also our (I can't remember the job title, but the one who sees to employee welfare, makes sure everyone is afforded their proper breaks and benefits, and discourages the butt-touchers) and who is a real stickler for our not doing work at home without billing the company, would get a bill from me for an hour of overtime...just for answering the phone.

At between 20 and 30 bucks an hour (read: "20 and 30 bucks per phone call"), they'd learn real quick not to call me on the weekends.

29. They don't have my number...
they only have my email address and they already know to never contact me. I live more than an hour away anyways...so the only reason they'd ever have to contact me is to say "Don't come in, you're fired." It's not like I can come in and cover shifts on short notice or anything.
