I've had a BAD day (rant straight ahead).
My cousin (more like my big sister) died yesterday (age 54). She was anorexic (for nearly 25 years) and her liver and kidneys failed. Her bones were so brittle, she was bedridden for the past 4 years.
I haven't had time to grieve. I'm her executor and she left very unorganized financial records. 2 years ago, we go to the bank and arrange it so I can sign checks for her. I gave her husband 5 blank signed checks to pay for final expenses. This morning I go to the bank to double check on that plus find out the balance in her account. They have NO record of my signing a paper. I have no access. The checks are not valid.
I called her lawyer. He never calls me back. I have to chase him down and finally get ahold of him 24 hours after she dies. He acts very unconcerned, no expression of sympathy and has the nerve to ask me, "Would you like me to handle the estate?" He proceeds to tell me what he charges and then asks me, "How much money did she have?" Asshole.
Her family is devastated and helpless financially. They are so busy having to arrange things and trying to find the money to pay for them, they haven't had time to grieve either. I hated having to call her husband at the funeral home and tell him, "those checks I gave you are no good".
Morale: take care of your final expenses before you die, double check all arrangements and tell your family that you love them.

3. Excellent advice.
Make detailed arrangements. Always double check your arrangements. Tell the people you love that you love them.

And never, ever work with an asshole voluntarily.
